I was at the NAMM show last week and played this one. He siad that they had just made it a couple of days earlier. In a word -- excellent! It played very well and had a nice tone that still punched through the noisy show environment. I would have loved to have taken it to a quiet room, but none were to be found. The Blackbird guitars were nice too (another story).

Earl, did you test it for paddling purposes? If I only get ONE Uke, it better be good for playing AND paddling should I end up in the sea on one of my adventures to Hawai'i!

Hi Julie,

It would work reasonably well for paddling purposes. The water would be tough on the tuning machines, but the rest of the uke wouldn't care. Kinda short, though. A carbon fiber guitar would provide more leverage as a paddle.

The resistance of the water against a large-bodied guitar would really make you work hard. Best to use a small bodied instrument as a paddle. That's why oars and paddles are so narrow. A uke with an extra-long neck might be best. Or maybe one of Kona-Bob's basses. I may not be the best expert though-I never was in a canoe that stayed upright. Especially after ramming speed was achieved.

I'm much better in a kayak than a canoe. I can picture two carbon fiber ukes strapped to a pole. When done paddling for the day, you set up camp, break down the paddle, and begin the jams!

Seriously, the Blackbird ukulele was a very nice instrument. Not the same as figured koa obviously, but a very nice voice and very playable. And you would not have to worry about its environment much except maybe leaving it in the car in the sun. The carbon fiber will be OK, but the resins will soften if you get them hot enough. That's why ALL carbon fiber airplanes are painted white.
