I'm fond of the idea of multiple Hawaiian music categories - and I don't see any chance of that happening, certainly not anytime soon. There are barely enough submissions for eligibility to guarantee continuation of even the one Hawaiian music category we have at present. Many of us worked over the years to see recognition by the Academy of Hawaiian music as a legitimate and thriving form, and it's painful to see that it isn't likely to last.
Oh, and did anyone notice which album won the Compilation award for the Hawai`i Music Awards? You know, the awards voted on by the people, not by industry insiders? Might want to check that out... |

Aloha, I tend to agree with Duke. My only question is: How did DH, a young and talented musician, edge out people who have been doing what they've been doing longer than he's been alive? No disrespect. Just an honest question. |

Aloha, Sam, and welcome to TaroPatch. Word has it you get to play music with Duke, you lucky buggah.
We've hashed through this so many times (and you can read it all for yourself), the horse needs no more beating, ok? The votes were cast, the awards given, time to move on and share the positives about the music we all love. |

Eh nah Gregg, I'm the lucky buggah because if I'm not mistaken Bruddah Sam might have a Hoku under his belt already. Ssssshhh don't say anything 'cause he's low profile and doesn't want anyone to know
Seems like I've been the privileged one this whole week.Saturday I jammed with the Abrigos,Ron Kanahele, Derrick Mau & TPers Ho'okani, s.m.80808,Justin Alderfer & Kealohalaniinc. Sunday with Ozzie,Bruddah Jay & Zack Onaga. Monday with TPer Fran Guidry. Tuesday was supposed to be with Oz & Fran but I opted out with a cock & bull story about getting injured but I actually just wanted Fran to have some one on one time with the "Wizard Oz" without the distraction I would be. Then Wednesday with Bruddah Sam. Today was Bruddah Jay & one of my ki ho'alu haumana Reid.....Want to guess again who's the lucky one? Eat your hearts out fellow TPers for now but look me up when you're in town. We go KANIKAPILA!!!!!

I agree Greg. You are right. But yes I am lucky. Lucky to have met such wholesome authentic well-rounded individuals such as Duke, Derrick, Auntie Wanda, etc. and you now! (pleased to meet you!)
After watching Duke's vids on you tube and being able to jam with him I feel very grateful and blessed. Meeting all of you has given me a sense of belonging. Thank you all! =) |

Eh Howzit Hiram We really not locked in to a particular location yet and your suggestion is as good as any. I know you guys in Kaliponi get real good gatherings on a regular basis so that might be an ideal destination too. Mahalo for the invite my bruddah.

Bruddah Duke If things pick up at work (been working only 32 hrs)--I might be able to see you guys in Washington. I have family there and it would be a great excuse to go. |

WOW! Y'all in Seattle! Our big day monthly is second Saturday. Starts with spam n' jam at the Kona Kitchen restaurant in my neighborhood, then off to Neej's fo' kaneakapila and great grinz. I have room to sleep up to 4 people. Keep it in mind. I'll talk to you more about it when I'm in Hawaii end of April, beginning of May (first to Maui on 4/22 for steel guitar festival, then to Oahu (4/26 - May 10), staying in Kailua, as usual, the home on the 10th. I'm looking forward to seeing y'all. |
