Friday will be the fifth of February. It reminds me of the tragic yet triumphant story of a tsunami that hit Miloli`i in 1868. The melody is hauntingly beautiful, the story is an amazing one.
La Elima – He mele he inoa no Miloli`i
Aunty Diana Aki – singing this profoundly touching mele… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3kIsPWllbM

I do not know who the folks are making this music, but it is lovely: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehPXFZxPOg8

La `Elima - Elizabeth Kuahaia La elima o Pepeluali Waimaka helele`i ke alanui
Paiki pu`olo pa`a i ka lima Waimaka helele`i i ke alanui!
Penei pepe `alala nei He hu`i ma`e`ele kou nui kino
Ha`ina `ia mai ana ka puana He mele he inoa no Miloli`i
The fifth day of February Tears fell along the roadway
Bags and bundles held tightly Tears fell along the roadway
The babies cry Numbing to the body
Tell the refrain A name song for Miloli`i
Source: Diane Aki "Troubled Paradise" CD, Ho`okena "Cool Elevation" CD, R.R. - Miloli`i ( fine twist or small swirling) was a fishing village renowned for its sennit that may have been named for an expert sennit twister who once lived there. This mele immortalizes the miraculous events caused by the magnitude 7.0 plus earthquake and destructive tsunami that struck the village in 1868. Written and oral history about and from Miloli`i confirm there was no loss of life, missing children were led to safety in caves and rescued 5 days later, and Hau`oli Ka Mana`o Church was lifted by the water and moved inland with little or no damage. The kapuna from other South Kona communities joined the village in thanksgiving, at the `aha `aina kai, lasting several days. The transpositional words epitomize an old style of haku mele that is lost.

I get egg on my face. My comments on You Tube called them "Aunties". But at least I said they sounded swell, which they do. |

Eh Wanda....Ho'o is Taropatch.net's newest member under the user name "paiakween" I saw the profile that said hometown Honolulu,Hawaii and shot an email informing her of our kanikapila's not knowing who it was.Derek showed me a YouTube of Ho'o performing & the video name and name on the TP profile were almost the same. I later confirmed with Derek that they were the same person.
Here's a video of newest TP member Iwalani Ho'omanawanui Apoke doing a medley of Hawaiian songs

Well, some awesome falsetto, as Auntie Maria said. I went searching videos after watching the one you posted, Duke. Plenty good music these folks make.

Aunty Wanda, you can call me Aunty, sis, tita, gurl, whatever....just no call me Braddah...lol. And yes that's Akoni now known as Ala. I would love to join in on a kanikapila session one day. Don't have too many of those anymore. All these kids listen to other stuff. They fail to realize beauty that is hidden neath a blanket of Hawaiian words. |
