I have always been fascinated with the few songs that Led has done over the years playing the autoharp.
I shot this video on 02-13-08 at a concert in Felton, CA. I had asked Led at an earlier concert why he never played the autoharp when he did concerts in California. He said that traveling with an autoharp was very difficult because it was hard to keep in tune (36 strings). Through the concert promoter I got Led's number and called him a few days before this particular concert and asked him if I brought one for him to play, would he be willing to do it. He said he would, as long as it was tuned up. I went to a local music shop and rented one for the night and this is the result. The one problem was I got an acoustic one, with no amp pick-up on it, so the sound guy was not very happy with me. Barring a few feedback issues, Led put on an amazing display with an instrument that I'm sure he doesn't spend much time practicing with. I have never posted this video until now because I never knew how to edit the video I shot, and more importantly I never had Led's permission to post it. Both of those issues are now resolved and I can share this (what I think is incredible) footage with the people here. Led is a remarkable artist.
The quality of my video has improved since I filmed this two years age, mainly because of a better camera, but even with the imperfect video, Led's genius comes through very clearly.

Norm, that video makes it evident why you've worked so hard to get an autoharp into Ledward's hands at those shows. Thanks for putting this up.

That was some amazing music!!! Why do I always get amazed by Led? He always does something amazing.
I grew up with autoharp. It was played by the country grannies, and folks like Mother Maybelle Carter. It was a prized instrument back iin the hills. When I grew up, it was taken over by the folk music movement. I am glad Kalapana was like living back in the hills of W. Va. People made their own entertainment, and oh my goodness, we are the benefit of that right now. Led is an amazing musician, which I am sure he has been told numerous times. Ainokea. I'd tell him a jillion billion times tothank hiim for letting us all be the benefit of that talent.
He made Kanaaka Waiwai sound like the angels singing from heaven.

There was actually another song that he did to start the autoharp set. It was "Paoakalani". When he started playing there was really bad feedback so he said he was only going to do the one song. But the sound guy got it together fairly well and the rest of the song sounded fine. At that point Led changed his mind and just continued on with what I have posted. So he actually did 4 songs all together. We could all tell that he was having fun doing something a little different for us. The reason that I didn't post the first song was because youtube has a ten minute time limit on uploads.
Of all the video I have taken over the past three years of filming concerts those 13 minutes, to me, are my favorite. |
