Want to buy some more Itunes songs but need your opinion. Was the Grammy's Best Hawaiian album winner 'Masters Of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar, Volume 2' truly the best pick? which songs are good on that one? here were the others...

He Nani, Tia Carrere & Daniel Ho;
Friends & Family Of Hawai`i, Amy Hanaiali`i;
Nani Mau Loa: Everlasting Beauty, Ho`okena.

Any other recordings the Grammy should have nominated?

Hard to say, since we don't really know your "tastes" in the deep pool that is Hawaiian music. Tell us what other stuff you have that you like, and we can make better recommendations based on that. Personally, I like it ALL, along with lotsa stuff that didn't get nominated.

Thanks Mika'ele :) if you are the one I think you are, Maile says hello :D

Thanks, too, Retro. I also have a wide variety of taste with regard to Hawaiian, but I seem to lean towards auana from 50s/60s (my uke' uncle's era). Still, I tend to love everything! Justin Young on down to kahiko times. Can't wait to check out your recs!

I too recommend the Hui Aloha CD. The group is Dennis and David Kamakahi, Martin Pahinui, and... why am I forgetting the fourth person?

When you say 'auana, do you mean traditional Hawaiian, or hapa haole? If you let us know, I could probably have an easier time giving you recommendations.

Good luck with hula!

He kehau ho'oma'ema'e ke aloha.

Hi again, Jeni.

Might I suggest that you check out the Mele.com website? You can start with their Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award Winners listings, nicely broken down by category - and you can listen to samples from the albums. Those listings will give you a wider range than the past six years worth of Grammy nominees.

For many of my own recommendations, you can read the five years' worth of reviews I wrote for the Northwest Hawai`i Times (2004-2009) at http://www.northwesthawaiitimes.com/Music/musichome.htm

(...and if I ever get the motivation going, I'll again be doing reviews for a Hawai`i-informational website sometime soon.)

Aloha Jenny,

Check out my blog "Hawaiian Music for Listening Pleasure," at http://amykstillman.wordpress.com

Thinking through issues of how to make recommendations is one of the threads I return to from time to time.

There are also find overviews of different compilation CDs, each of which has its own particular character.

Auana might be actually hula ku'i. The dance is auana and the music is hula ku'i. Reference P. Mdeiros' great new book.

No'eau, eia au he mea pa'ani wale nō.
