Auntie is so excited!!! There is a new market near us, within 3 miles or less....it is a huge market of Asian food delights. It is primarily Chinese but has plenty other ethnicities as well. It has plenty of fresh produce, fresh fish, meat in cuts that we normally do not find at the regular grocery, things like black chicken quail, beef tendon, every kind of noodle you can think of, plenty of frozen dim sum, mochi and on and on and on. It used to be a huge sporting goods store, but now this market moved in. And they have a restaurant that right now is open only on the weekends for lunch and early dinner. The store also has a bakery and a prepared foods department. We bought sticky rice steamed inside lotus leaf. They had blue crab for $3.50/lb.
Auntie is way excited because I bought taro. We going have poi or a reasonable fascimile thereof.
Woo-hoo.

Of course you know we will all be expecting a picture of Auntie doing the pounding. |

Might be Unko doing the pounding. Do you still want a pitcha? Won't be pretty, like Auntie. Unko Paul |

Auntie does all the cooking. Except for rice. Unko makes the rice because I just can't seem to make it good. Of all things. I can make all kind of sophisticated fancy kine kaukau but not rice.
But if I do make a peecha, more cute of Unko than me. Maybe we take peecha `Oni`oni, but she don't know how to make poi. |

Have you tried a rice steamer? So easy even I could do it. Ours was only about $5 at WalMart. Works great! Put in the right amount of rice, add the right amount of water, stick it in the microwave and forget about it. It does, of course, come complete with instructions as to rice-to-water ratio and cooking and cooling times. |

Sure still want a picture. Auntie, Unko, no mattah.
Out west our way we got the giant Ranch 99 Markets-- also lotsa cuts you don't see at Safeway (and lotsa animals you don't see at Safeway). I go get big bags of chicken feet to throw in the stock pot-- nothing better.
Auntie, I'm sure that poi will be super heart-healthy. Unfortunately, from my mainland haole perspective, I'm afraid that's the nicest thing I can say about the stuff. |

Rice cookers I've seen make more rice than the two of us normally can use. We got choke left over from yesterday. Can you cook less than a full rice cooker, or does it need to be full to work right? I don't have a problem cooking it on top of the stove in a sauce pan, but Auntie likes me to help with the cooking, so I make the rice. Ysually one cup of rice at a time, couple times a week. A 6 cup rice cooker would take us 3 weeks to eat. Unless I ate it for breakfast every day. I might get tempted to make Spam musubi, and that's not on our diet list. I do cook other stuff as well, but my forte` is baking, while Auntie's is real food. Unko Paul |

They had more kinds of fish, plenty stuff I neva heard of, one very long like a puhi, called "belt fish". Some huge catfish, some buffalo fish, which over here they catch in lake Erie, but is considered a trash fish; had sole, tanks with live tilapia (which I really don't care for), and plenty others which I cannot remember. Also, they were selling just the heads of some other fish that now I cannot remember. They had a huge fish department. I was so thrilled by the produce department. I got a whole slew of bean sprouts, so fresh and crisp for only 33 cents. I also got some of the best tangerines I have ever had, so juicy and sweet, not harsh citrus. They were tiny. I do not know if there is a difference between tangerines and mandarine oranges.
It is a fun place to go and cheap, too. They also have Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Indian, Indonesian, Thai and I cannot even remember all what.
A great asset for this area. Nothing like this heretofore, even in our small "China-town" area. Get groceries, but nothing like this, mostly frozen and canned or dried stuff. |

The Miracleware microwave rice cooker we use has max 6-cup capacity; we usually only make three for the two of us. I think as long as the rice-to-water ratio is right, there's no problem with reduced recipes. Here's one link, though its shipping is nearly as much as the cooker itself

It tastes great. I don't know why it's so pale, but I never know why some beer tastes like it's watered down, either. I don't know much, but I ain't lost! Unko Paul |
