This is priceless, Bob. I love John Oliver. There was also a piece he did at the RNC convention about mandatory health insurance in HI. Thanks for sharing. |

"traveled to Hawaii to reinforce their message of fiscal responsibility" - is this Satire? I can't see the clip in my country! |

That is pretty funny...but let me say this about that.
The reason we first traveled to Hawai`i is that it was cheaper to do so than to go to Disney in Florida. We were saving our money for an Alaskan cruise. But after we got aboult half of the money saved up and it was cold winter over here, we started thinking about going somewhere warm. I loved going to Disney and I thought that without kids, it could relaly be a swell trip. Then the AAA newspaper came with a deal on an escorted Hawaiian cruise and couple days extra on O`ahu. Cheaper than a trip to Disney (not counting food).
So, if the RNC had to have a meeting...and if they had x number of dollars to spend, and it would cost those same x number of dollars on the mainland or iin Hawaiian, then whay not. It makes good fiscal sense to me to get the best bang for your buck.
Sheesh, I wish I had a job (back when I was working, I wouldn't want a job now) that would go to Hawai`i. Once I was traveling for work to get an award at a meeting of National Industries for the Severely Handicapped. The meeting was held in Palm Springs, CA. I thought this is swell that the gov't is paying to fly me to Palm Springs, CA to accept this award. On go't money yet even. How cool. Wrongo!!! I had to fly from Cleveland to Dallas and from Dallas to California. A wee bit of weather trouble was brewing around Dallas. A tornado. We were diverted to Dallas to Houston, and were just flying around and around in circles. Finally they said we would have to land to get fuel. There was no jetway for us to pull up to due to the number of planes diverted from elsewhere. We sat on the tarmac for about 3 hours. Finally they had a jetway and told us we could get off for about an hour to use the bathroom. All the food places were closed by then, it was so late in the evening. (I had to be at this meeting at 8 a.m. the next day). There was no food in the airport. I was getting a low blood sugar reaction from not having food. I had consumed my last snack in my purse hours earlier. I went to the airline personnel and told them of my low blood sugar plight. The scrounged me up a stale dinner roll and a can of orange juice. Life saving. Truly. Then we got back on the airplane and finally landed in Dalls, but auwe, I missed my connecting flight to California. Nothing was flying out of Dallas. The airport was shut down for the night. Except for the folks trying to prevent a riot by handing out cots and blankies. I didn't play full contact sports at that time, so I left the cots and blankies to the other customers. I had my wheelie carry-on, so I pulled out my new outfit that I was supposed to wear the next morning at the awards ceremony and wadded it up to make a pillow to lay on the floor to try to sleep. Then the cleaners came to mop the floors of the terminal. They slopped mop water all over my new outfit. Az OK, I wasn't going to use it anyway. So then I thought, maybe I will get a hotel. No rooms were avaiable. So I stayed up all night in the airport so I could call my boss and the NISH folks to let them know I wasn't going to be there to accept the award. So much for my first boondoggle trip at government expense. I finally left Dallas about 12:30 their time and got back to Cleveland in time for evening rush hour, without sleep for way too long. I hardly remember driving home from the airport. And when I got home, Paul had soup waiting for me to eat and the bed was made and all cushy. (What a man). And I slept and slept.
K-den. The moral to the story is you get what you pay for. And clothes make lousy pillows. |

Bob, why on earth would it be anything to do with the British Govenrment?- Why would they care?
I suspect it's more to do with the copyright owners of the aforementioned Daily Show and Youtube.
I imagine there's UK/European stuff you can't view for similar reasons. F'rinstance, the BBC has a thing called the Iplayer - I can access most of last weeks BBC TV/Radio programmes at any time during the week. It's absolutely amazing, and it's free at the point of access. The BBC is funded by citizens who own televisions, i.e. most of us. So I don't think you can use this service outside of the UK.
Alison and I are hoping go to Florida in May - there's an international conference for Physical Therapists Ali wants to present at. Previously we've been to Vancouver, and Barcelona, and stayed on for a (relatively) inexepnsive holiday after the conferences. This time, she's managed to get funding for the air fare, and the conference but not for the accommodation! Presumably it's OK for her to do the presentation, but she shouldn't be sleeping on the Govt's money!
What I need to know is how can I persuade the conference organisers to schedule next year's conference in Hawaii? |

Perhaps there is a misunderstanding about flying delegates from 50 states to one location. It's not cheaper to fly the Maine delegates to Hawai`i than to fly the Hawaiian delegates to Maine. Do British political parties have similar gatherings ? It would seem that delegates from Australia or Canada are going to travel a long way to join in the strategy sessions, or be excluded from any part in the process. I don't underestand the whole British political system, so I may be missing details. But the cost of these conventions are paid by the parties, not by the government,in the USA. Unko Paul |
