I have a large collection of Slack Key CD’s that I’m very happy with, but I fall behind in other Hawaiian categories.
What vocal artists or groups / albums do you have that are significant for a well-rounded collection? Who would you most recommend and what categories do they fall in (traditional, falsetto, paniolo, etc).
Thanks!

The seeds for the flowering of our personal peace are within our hopeful, but fragmented, selves. Reflection and silence compose the winds that nurture our simplicity that is the essence of beauty. - Frank Howell

i gave away my entire CD collection before i joined the military, to a complete stranger..
man.. it's probably sitting in a pawnshop somewhere in Oregon at the moment
in my opinion, absolute essentials are:
the first Kapena album, all the IZ albums, all the KCB's, Kekuhi Kanahele was one of my favorites, I love Dennis Pavao, and Darren Benitez, Kamalamalama was very nice, Auntie Genoa Keawe, Theresa Bright, Amy Hanaiali'i G., Makaha Sons, Brothers Caz, C & K, Kalapana, Palolo, Hui 'Ohana, Sunday Manoa, Olomana, Sistah Robi, Na Leo Pilimehana, Sudden Rush, Ho'aikane, Hapa, Papa Kolea, John Cruz, Pound 4 Pound, Sean Na'ao'ao, Ehukai, etc.. i know i'm missing a hundred more..
they are definitely not in any order
thats my immediate list anyway, besides the slack key recordings, though my slack key recordings weren't even half of what Ozzie posted
then there's people who like three plus, ekolu, fiji, oshen, justin, i'm not so big on that genre, "Jawaiian" .. i feel it's pretty degenerate..

I'd add several to that list, including Raymond Kane, Frank Kawai Hewett, Ho'opi'i Bros., Ka'au Crater Boys, Ernie Cruz Sr., Diana Aki, Sons of Hawai'i (all the old ones with Eddie, Joe, Feet, Dennis and Moe), the two or three Moe Keale did, Lim Family, Aunty Edith Kanaka'ole for starters.
I also have an extensive Hawaiian collection, most of it is on vinyl or cassette. Wish I could find the mp3 files. Nolan Hao from Ho'Aikane had a solo slack key album that came out when their first album was released ... before they got so heavily into Jawaiian. It's probably somewhere on this forum but I posted my Hawaiian collection a few years ago and got some raised eyebrows because so much of it is out of print or very hard to find now. Think I have about 400 albums/cassettes/CDs.
If anyone wants me to post my discography again, let me know and I can copy the file.

Someone here suggested this to me some time ago. It is an awesome collection of Hawaiian "folk" music narrated by Kindy Sproat on 2 CD's and includes a very nice booklet. It is the the best collection of Hawaiian music that I have.

I recommend all the Hawaiian Steel albums (6 in all). Great playing by contemporary steelers. History of Steel Guitar and Masters of Steel Guitar are also good, and they include vocals. |
