My sister-in-law's Kamaka Tenor [bought-new by parents in '60s, she took lessons from Peter Moon on it] was stolen last week in Albuquerque. Smash-and-grab thieves [front door & adjacent wall/jamb]grabbed what they could while she was walking the dog. White label with orange & black KK, "Patricia Souza" written on it. Case has yellow lining, KCCN radio station sticker.
the Baby Taylor that was also taken can be replaced but this is a special uke, appreciate folks keepin' an eye out for it! Like to recover it more than broke the @ $$ of thieves if that makes sense.

Let the local pawnshops know and say a prayer to St. Anthony. Hope you find it safe and sound.

Just a word of caution, and I learned this the hard way. When you call pawn shops, just tell them that you are looking for a certain type of instrument. I heard from one pawn shop owner that if they "know" it is stolen, they cannot buy it. I must have phoned 7 or 8 pawn shops about my father's Martin which was stolen, but when this one owner told me this, I had to quit calling. Still, as luck would have it, someone called me back, the Guitar had come in that afternoon, and I was able to buy it back from them. (I had promised them I would repay them every penny they spend on it.)

If you find a stolen item of yours at a pawnshop, do not buy it back. Call the police and let them know. If a business buys a stolen item, whether they know it is stolen or not, it is their liability. This would also be the best way to catch the thieves. I would spend some time on the phone and call all the pawn shops and music stores in yours and the surrounding towns and ask if they have any used baritone ukes for sale. If you hear of anything that sounds like yours, visit the shop to identify the uke and then call the cops. |

also, see what the most likely acoustic string shops there are around there--not just around Albuquerque, but also Sante Fe, perhaps Taos and other likely markets nearby, depending on how much time you can devote to this...I suppose do what you reasonably can, and let things take their karmic course.
But, of course, keep it sane, whatever that is...I'm still working on "letting go" of things, friends, and other concerns along the way. |

I'd extend the search to Gallup and Farmington to the east and all the way down to El Paso in the south. Thieves are very resourceful. |
