Well, Jean Smith, for one cuz she just signed up...
Yep, Jean wins the coveted "First Camper Award" again. I believe there's a stuffed mongoose with her name on it somewhere...
BTW: It is not "official" official-- but Jeff Peterson & Canadian ukulele virtuoso James Hill are on tap to teach.
Pre-registration has started; online registration begins soon. |

Hey Michael--et al.
Yep, I'm still the Admin Bloke for the Aloha Music Camp. I work under contract with the Mohala Hou Foundation, so I'll be handling all the registrations etc. just as in the past.
Only now I have a mess of bosses-- so I can proudly sing all those labor songs I learned in my youth....
We mailed out a newsletter to the Aloha Camp `ohana with preregistration info a couple of weeks ago. Sounds like you copy may have gone missing, as we say down here in Jackson County. By all means get in touch with me directly.
We'll have online registration for February 2011 up and running in a couple of weeks. |

The national economy and Washington state response will prevent me from attending camp in 2011.
If you love Hawaiian music and culture, if you relate to the Beamers and friends, you gotta go if you possibly can.

Um, should that not be Alan Akaka, not Alana? Unless there is a magical Miss Alana with super steel guitar talents as well...

Thanks for the sharp eyes, Julie. Alan Akaka it is.
I think I typed "Alana Akaka" about a dozen times yesterday.
Must be something wrong with my brain..

Keola has invited Kumu Hula Charles Ka‘upu to teach at the Winter Aloha Camp. Charles will teach daily classes in Oli (Hawaiian Chant) and, for the first time at camp, a daily hula class for men.
Why should the women have all the fun, eh?
Kumu Hula Charles Ka‘upu has lived in Hawai‘i all his life save for three years spent in Okinawa. Born and raised on the Island of O'ahu, he has for the last 16 years been on the island of Maui.
His family comes from the island of Moloka‘i with another part of the family well established on the island of Hawai'i as well. He has spent the better part of his life teaching history, culture and religion, lecturing not only at Maui Community College, Maui Campus, but on the islands of Lana‘i and Moloka‘i as well. He has also traveled to Washington D.C. to lecture at the National Geographic Headquarters, performing there as well at the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian's ground-breaking ceremony. Charles' expertise in oli, the ancient art of Polynesian chant handed down through the ages, comes from formal schooling as well as from family practice, kupuna, and personal mentors. He has earned the rite of passage in the traditional sense of graduation called an ‘uniki through a process called 'ai-lolo,which literally means to ”eat the brain,“ a symbolic eating ritual of a consecrated food source, after which the graduation performance is showcased. Charles became Kumu Hula in 1979 and has been teaching chant and dance these many years. He first became a part of the musical troupe HAPA in 1993 and continues to travel and perform with HAPA today.
This is Charles' second Aloha Camp and we are honored that he will join us to share his extensive knowlege. He has the rare talent of knowing how to give each student exactly what he or she needs. Don't miss this chance for men to experience another side of hula!
Registration is open and we would love to see you in February.

Alison and I registered last night!
I wasn't sure we'd be able to afford to do it - actually I'm still not! - but we promised ourselves we'd go back at least one more time, so we will.
I'm looking forward to it more than I have words to express. |

I just tried to access the Aloha Camp web site and it comes up "account suspended". What's that all about? |

Thanks, all! We are aware of the glitch with the AMC website and are working on it. It will be up and running again soon. Personally, I can hardly wait until February camp (still dreaming about those little pastries at breakfast). A hui hou1 Annie |
