I'm not generally one to post a "political" issue, but this one's got me. (It really ain't political, it's environmental--but some folks assume that the environment is a politcal issue, so there you go...)
As a longtime supporter of the Surfrider Foundation-- and as someone who recalls the gooey tar we had to scrape off our bare feet when we went to the beach as kids, not to mention the Santa Barbara oil spill and the continued degradation of our coastal wildlife... I'm going to let my voice be heard.
Here's some info from the Surfrider Foundation:
Offshore Drilling Myths
1. New technologies will prevent oil spills.
Try telling the Australians that. In August 2009 a state-of-the-art rig using "new technology" spilled 2000 barrels of oil a day for 10 weeks into the fragile East Timor Sea.
2. Offshore drilling is good for the economy and will create jobs!
Our beaches are economic engines. One oil spill would devastate the local coastal tourism industry and the livelihood of people working in the fishing industry.
3. We won't be reliant on foreign oil.
We'll still have to import at least 40% of our oil to meet our daily consumption needs.
4. We'll have a long-term supply of oil.
It won't be enough. Offshore drilling will only give us about 18 months of supply at our current rate of consumption.
For more myth debunking, take a look at this fact sheet and pass it on to your friends and family.

If you do not agree with me, that is fine. But please let's keep any discussion civil and about the facts, not emotions.

Well said Mark, and I totally agree. Mahalo.
On one hand, I appreciate the middle-ground the President is attempting to reach. On the other hand, drilling in the Beaufort or Chuckchi Seas is just crazy. I'm no expert, but I've seen the ice, I've seen "breakup," I've seen arctic storms, and know what it's like to try and work at 40 below. (Yes, what was he thinking? )
The arctic environment is very fragile, and is way colder than Valdez, where you can still find oil in sediments from the 1989 spill.
I should follow-up this topic w/ something like "Nuclear Clean Power Myths."
