You just might be able to - for the first time. All I need to do now is...
a) Get Andy's permission
b) Get the permission of John Almeida, James I'i, Keali'i Reichel, Tony Todaro, Robert Cazimero, and Andy Cummings for using their songs (because I would be a hypocrite not to at least say I would try)
c) Get the 60hz hum out of the master minidisc (made by clamping the microphone to a gooseneck lamp backstage because I failed Electrical Engineering 101 and thus forgot how a lightbulb works)
I will tell you that the musicians had almost as many wardrobe changes as the dancers. That is what Andy gets for choosing a metrosexual musical partner wth a Manuheali'i addiction.
Stay tuned...

Hi Andy,
you guys were awesome! It was really nice to hear some real Hawaiian music here in NJ. I'm from Hawaii and get home sick alot, and to hear the music just brought me home... Thanks! Last night when you guys were talking about Keola Beamer, I was thinking his uncle Keola was my vp for my high school. Just watching you guys perform reminded me of my childhood and how we used to hang out, my aunty juliet used to play the uke and uncle domingo played the guitar and sing we had a great time! When is you next gig? where? My husband went back to the art center because he left his wallet,he was checking out the girls and lost his mind! Well he was saying that you mentioned NY has something in central park, when? love to see you there!

Thanks again, everyone, for the well wishes. The gig was a lot of fun. It was a very nice venue... 300 seat, 2-year old performing arts center. What did this mean to me? I did not have to bring/carry a PA system, mic stands, etc. I could travel light. And we had monitors! Very cool to have an intimate, captive, appreciative audience. SCCC took great care of us from our sound to feeding us after the show.
I opened with three songs solo to feature Hawaiian slack key guitar. Bill followed with three songs solo to feature his jazz stylings on guitar and falsetto. Then it was the two of us and the girls of Polynesian Dance Productions. The girls took us on a trip to Tahiti, New Zealand and back to Hawaiʻi. 90 minutes with no intermission. We closed with Somewhere Over the Rainbow/Wonderful World... Bill on ʻukulele, me on vox. We'd never played that song together until the show.
A big thanks to Bill Wynne and my friends at PDP!

Hi Colleen,
Thanks for coming out, enjoying the show, and posting here!!! We saw your husband return and find his wallet. It was great having you in the front row. We had a blast and to have people acknowledge and appreciate it makes it even better.
Here is info on the picnic. http://www.halawai.org/event/picnic2010 Check the website. There are some other cool events. Hope to see you again soon. |

Hey! And don't forget out own dressing room - not shared with the dancers - complete with private bathroom bigger than my family room. And the green room for just hanging out. And the dinner ordered by menu - anything we wanted - and delivered hot to the green room. What was THAT all about?

Um... You couldn't possibly know this, but... I transferred the MD recording to a .WAV file last night. Because of my penchance for wala'au, we actually went 2 hours 4 minutes. I think we owe the dancers O/T.
I just want to say this publicly... Andy is the answer to so many of my prayers. For over 30 years, I thought I was all alone - the only guy in NJ who does what I do. To discover that there was another guy only 50 miles away who does what I do - and does it better - has made my musical existence complete. I tried to find an outlet... a venue... an audience for 30 years. We joke about the neon sign, name-in-lights thing that Andy had going on at this performing arts center. But that actually pretty much sums up our symbiotic relationship: In New Jersey, people know Andy Wang. That name and that talent gets him the best gigs, and now I am riding his coat tails and focusing on the easiest parts of the gig - showing up, plugging in, playing and singing, and occasionally trying to be funny. And despite the gravity of the venue or who might be in the audience, we rarely rehearse, and we have no set list. We just walk out there, call the tune, say a quick prayer, and see what happens. I have never been disappointed in what happens.
Oh, and by the way, we met through this forum - a forum that would not exist without him.
I am so grateful that we are both relatively young men and can enjoy this for a very long time. Mahalo, my brother.
I will try to get some sound clips up this evening. But as it is my anniversary, I may be busy.

Ouch. The sound from the side of the stage is tough to listen to. You're hearing monitors and a very odd mix. Well, if you use your imagination and give some benefit of the doubt, you get an idea. I hope it sounded better center house.
And too bad we don't get to see the dancers via the audio. |

Aloha, Andy and Bill --
The concert this past Tuesday evening was no ka 'oi!
Mahalo nui loa to the two of you -- and all the good people working behind the scenes at the Sussex County Community College Performing Arts Center -- for presenting live Hawaiian and Polynesian music and dance in the northwest corner of the Garden State. You could have knocked me over with a feather when I read the announcement in _The Township Journal_ newspaper last week.
I am so glad to find slack-key players here in NJ. I lived in Hawaii for 3 years in the early 1980s, and went through musical withdrawal when I returned to the Mainland. People think I was nuts that I moved back, but it's where I grew up, where my family lives... and the Delaware Water Gap is dear to my heart and soul. It was a tremendous blessing to live in Honolulu for as long as I did, and I cherish my time -- and family and friends -- there. I used to try to time my visits back so I could catch Kanikapila at Andrews Amphitheatre at UH-Manoa... just up the hill from my old apartment.
You have no idea what a relief it was to meet two fellow Jerseyans who are also bonkers over the music of the Islands. I discovered TaroPatch.net last October, but hadn't logged on again until today -- after Andy mentioned at the concert that he was the ringleader of this fine message board.
Years ago my friend Leslie and I somehow stumbled across the Radio Hula store not far from the Liz Christie Bowery Houston Garden in Lower Manhattan... which introduced me to the erstwhile Hawaii Cultural Foundation. Leslie and I took a class in making haku lei. Later, my husband and I attended several concerts at Symphony Space by Uncle Ray Kane, Rev. Dennis Kamakahi, George Kahumoku, and Keola Beamer, among other wonderful performers. I am glad to learn that Halawai, Inc. has organized to continue the cultural mission of HCF.
Aside to Bill Wynne: I have been wearing out your falsetto CD! Thanks from the bottom of my heart!
I'll sign off for now... and keep my ear to the ground for future performances. ;-)
Me kealoha pumehana, Beth
PS -- The dancing was gorgeous -- three cheers for Malia and and ladies of Polynesian Dance Productions!
PPS to Colleen... It was grand talking story with you before the show. Glad your husband found his wallet! |
