Ho Keaka,
Have a safe flight and a really good time among all those sweet steel guitar notes floating in the air. I am jealous! Someday I will go to steel festivals too, as soon as I learn to play the thing halfway decently...

Hi Julie -
You already play halfway decently. You have a terrific ear and a great musical sense, which is a huge part of it. That amazing long scale Rik ain't bad, either.
See ya down the Pike.
And Slip... see ya in a couple days. I'll wear a red nose so's ya knows me. |

Mahalo, Bra! I stay Oahu Monday, 4/26. I'll call Jay when I get settled. I stay Kailua again. For all of you - Man, what a birthday! I'm having a blast. I'm in Ka'anapali, Maui for the weekend at a steel guitar festival. Played on stage with Alan Akaka's Islanders, jammed with da boyz (Henry Allen, Duke Ching, Lion Kobayoshi, Alan Akaka, Gary Aiko, Greg Sardihna, KonaBob, Mark, Gordon, and Kiaho) until the wee hours, had a fabulous birthday dinner with my Friends Mark and Annie Nelson from OR, KonaBob and Shirley from Kona and Alan and Michiko Akaka. I'm off to Oahu for 2 weeks of picking and learning and then to LA where I'll play with the grandkids, eat at least one Tommy Burger, and be a judge at Topanga. Then home on the train! I'll be back home 5/19. Wanda - I met John & his wife yesterday - they are lovely people. I wan' mo music!!!! I wan greedy buggah fo music! |

Jack ain't kidding. It was a wonderful birthday, and a real treat to be along for the ride. Jack played real good on stage, and even better in the jam.
As I was packing up at around midnight, I looked around and the realization of just who I'd been played with for the last couple of hours hit me.
This wasn't a huge session-- just the heavies from the festival and a couple of us paying customers.
These guys--Alan, Duke, Lion Kobayoshi, Greg, Gary Aiko and on and on -- are the absolute tops in the world. Amazing musicians & kind hearted human beings. And Jack and KonaBob were hanging right there with 'em. What an honor to be art of it.
There's that magic moment when someone takes a solo, and all the other musicians break out laughing... cuz it was so good. Happened a lot last night.
So thanks, Jack. Now go have some more fun.
And I'm definitely jealous about that Tommy burger.

Note the difference between the journeyman and the master: I'm knuckled down grinding away, and Alan is coasting along smiling! Thanks Bob! Folks, da Konabob is one great kane! He and Shirley and Mark and Annie had such a great time!! - What a great bunch us Taropathcers are! Now on to Oahu! btw - hoof hearted? |
