Hey Jack,
Sorry haven't been in touch with you since the last time we talked but we all seem to be pretty busy. I don't think we'll be able to put anything together by the time you leave with mother's day and everything, everyone seems to have other plans already. Was looking forward to jamming again but I'm sure you'll be back real soon. If anything clears up between now and the weekend I'll give you a ring.
Aloha, Ho'okani |

OK! I'm booked for the weekend, too. FYI, I played with the Keawe Ohana at the Marriott last Thursday (and tomorrow, too), with Rory Lono's band at his church Saturday morining, with Led Kaapana at the Kona Brewry on Sunday. I saw some of you at the HSGA stage on Lei Day, but I didn't play because Kamaka Tom didn't get my messages to him. I'm playing again tomorrow with the Keawe's, Saturday at Alan Akaka's school concert at the Windward Mall in Kaneohe, and Sunday with Rory's band - a paying gig! Ahwe! I may be back in August for Cyril's bash in Waimanolo, tho. |

After all my glowing reports about carrying on my Stringmaster, I got screwed by an overzealous head attendent on my flight to LA. I had to whine and cajole to get the steel gate checked and back into my hands at the gate. Maybe it's just dealing with the usual LA BS, and the flight WAS full. Oh, well... otherwise service was, as usual, very good. |

Keaka,
That's why I have not brought my long-scale Rickenbacher Fry Pan to Hawai'i, although I'd love to. I am scared that it would be gate-checked and I'd never see it again. It is a priceless instrument in mint condition....

Here's a trick to make sure you get it on the plane:
Don't argue, just smile at the gate agent when you hand him/her/it your boarding pass and ask for a green tag (or whatever color your airline uses) to gate check the case.
Then walk through the doors to the ramp & put the green ticket in your pocket.
When you get to the plane, place your sacred object in the overhead.
It helps to be seated in one of the early boarding areas--try limping if you need to.
Seriously, this is how I got my little guitar to and from Maui last month.

When I said I whined, it was metaphorical. Of course, it doesn't pay to be nasty or petulant - that guarantees that the instrument gets fed to the gorrilas. I just wanted to make sure that I got the instrument back at the gate. The result of my pleading was that the head flight attendant came out and made sure that the head baggage guy got my instrument to me. I watched him bring it from the airplane to the gate. My horror experiences have been between the gate and baggage claim, when the baggage guys are trying to get luggage out ASAP. In the end, 2 out of 3 flights wasn't bad. Since I'm going back to Seattle on the train, my instruments will be with me all da time. Oh - if you can get your instrument back at the gate, a steel guitar is probably the most damage resistant. Remember a Rickenbacher frypan is made out of aluminium - hard to break, yeah? |

Yeah, hard to break. But small, lightweight and so easy to STEAL! Mus be why they call it a Steal Guitar. I don't blame Julie for having concerns for a nearly irreplaceable Ric. That's where a more common cheaper instrument comes in. Seems like the Ric should be small enough for the overheads, though. I took my dulcimer on several flights, twice to Hawai`i and once to Oklahoma City. No one ever said a word, except passengers asking if we were having in-flight music. Unko Paul |

Now, THAT would be a treat. Next time you fly, tell 'em that if they let you carry the instruments on, you'll entertain folks. |

Maybe get a gig and fly for free! They don't serve no food, so no fruit for nobody to throw at me! Unko Paul |

I'm home now. Got in last night. The train ride was great! We got in 15 minutes early, the food was very good, the service was fantastic, and the scenery - oh, how good! The Coast Starlight goes up the beach from Oxnard to San Luis Obispo, then sleep time thru the Valley, waek up to Mt. Shasta, then over the Cascades to Eugene. I recommend the trip highly. Mahalo nui loa to all my Hawaiian friends, and apologies to those who I missed. See y'all on the next go-round. |

Wait, what?!?! I NEVER hear of the Coast Starlight getting here early! Lucky man, Keaka - and the weather held for your return, too. 24 hours later, and you'd be a rider on the storm. |
