PROJECT TITLE: Welcome Figure Carver, Northwest Native Canoe Center
DEPARTMENT: General Administration, United Indians of All Tribes Foundation
Contract Amount: $22,000 Contract Duration: TBD

INTRODUCTION: The Northwest Native Canoe Center (NNCC) is to be located near
downtown Seattle on the west side of the South Lake Union Park. The canoe center
is intended to create a place which celebrates the rich indigenous maritime
heritage and culture of the Coast Salish and other “canoe peoples” of the
Northwest. The NNCC will highlight the indigenous maritime heritage, provide
unique access to the Lake Union waterfront, feature a range of cultural and
educational activities focusing on Native American interests and needs, offer
rental facilities for small-to-mid-sized meetings and conferences and a place
for exhibitions of Native American Art and provide a venue for sales of Native
American handcrafted products.

BACKGROUND: The first phase of the NNCC involves the carving and placement of a
welcoming figure in front of the planned plaza on the site. The plaza, when
developed, will serve as a gathering place and overlook from which people can
watch the canoes and welcome them as they land on the beach. It is the intent of
the United Indians of All Tribes Foundation to create a culturally appropriate
welcome figure in the Coast Salish/Puget Salish tradition. However, as a
multi-tribal institution that will acknowledge all canoe cultures, the intent is
to also integrate major themes of other canoe nations into the figure.

SCOPE OF WORK: To carve a traditional Coast Salish/Puget Salish welcome figure
for the Northwest Native Canoe Center at the South Lake Union Park in Seattle,
WA. The welcome figure will be approximately 10-12 ft. tall and will incorporate
the following themes:
• United Indians of All Tribes Foundation (possibly logo)
• Canoe Culture
• Artists will be expected to help in the mounting and placement of the finished
carved welcome figure,
• Artists will be involved in planning and conducting a pole-raising ceremony at
the completion of the project.
• Artists will assist in develop an artist’s/cultural statement that explains
the figure and its meanings.
The timeline for completion of the figure is projected to be no later than 6
months, depending on reception of an appropriate carving log.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will have a portfolio of previous work, with a
preference given to those artists who have created Salish themed welcome figures
in the past. Applicants will present a portfolio of their previous work in
design and carving. A preference will be given those artists who have created an
erected Coast / Puget Salish carved figures in the past.
Drawings or sketches that show the artist’s vision for the welcome figure and
how it meets the cultural/ artistic/ organizational listed above. Based on the
proposals received UIATF will conduct interviews with artists whose vision
coincides with UIATF artistic/cultural requirements. Please send an artist’s
resume and a brief description detailing how you are qualified to carry out this
scope of work.

I'm not involved in the project in any way; just passing along a posting from an art group I'm in. Perhaps you could contact 'Will" yourself?
I posted it here because of the long history between the Nisqually tribe and the Kalama family.
