Ok, I was taking a nap this afternoon. Suddenly I woke up thinking; "What would a guitar sound like under water?"
Mark showed me his nice graphite composite guitar while I was on Maui earlier this month. Its completely waterproof, right? If you had a tuner clipped on the head of the guitar, tuned it to taropatch and submerged it in a swimming pool until only the tuner was sticking out, what would the guitar be tuned to? The water would certainly slow the strings way down, but would the strings be in tune with each other?
Since water transfers vibrations better than air, would you hear subtleties that you don't hear when playing in the air?
We may never know the answer unless I shove Mark and his guitar into the swimming pool in at Aloha Music Camp next month.
All speculation is welcome... Aloha, -Konabob

Use a pick, Kory. I posit that it would not sound at all. I think the water pressure would keep the instrument from vibrating. Sheer conjecture, however. |

Inquiring minds want to know! Let's ship Mark & the guitar to Mythbusters and get the results. Only thing is, they do have a penchant for explosions. I suspect they would create a Robot-Mark to go under water & strum the guitar, but would a robot be able to play slack-key? "From the heart and through the fingers."- George Winston Unko Paul |

Instead of trimming the extra length off the strings, we could put fish hooks on. Double purpose strings. Scientific research and catch lunch at the same time. Only don't plug no amps in, might make make! |

Konabob, Whatever you (or anyone else), do (or does), DON'T plug the underwater guitar into an amp! By the way, what had you been smoking before, during, or after your nap?
For your performance, some hula dancers would probably be nice. However, I don't know how successful you'd be in recruiting vocalists!
Do you have an arrangement of Octopus's Garden for this endeavor?
Don't forget your mask and snorkle, Froppe |

If Mythbusters did it, they would probably delegate to Tory or Grant. Jamie & Adam would only do the job if large amounts of explosives were involved. They already have a Robo-Grant from the Surfboard & wave from explosion in the water episode. (which was BUSTED - unless there were once again, very LARGE amounts of explosives). I am sure they would try to figure a way to blow up a guitar. It would have to be acoustic. I neva like someone get bazatted. |

Wow, Konabob. Things are slow on Big Island, yeah?
The Ice-Diviing...well, all I've got to say about that purported music is that someone didn't clean the flux off when they soldered their electronics.
I do hope Uncle Paul does not want to go dunking one of our `ukuleles in the bathtub.
Real science must be able to be replicated. |

Shoulda known Henry Kaiser would be involved!
Too bad he didn't dub in the original sound files from under the ice.
As for the uke--leads to some interesting sonic possibilities. Don't let Henry Kaiser see this!
Oh, looks like he already has--check out the photo of him underwater with the uke. It cycles through on his homepage.

If Konabob does multi-track recording with his sub-surface project, would that be called "underdubbing"? |

I think if you are playing for the fishes, they are only interested in hearing you play scales.
Be sure you tuna up first. Then you may try "Salmon-chanted Evening" on 'em, just for the halibut. (Oh, cod - here we go...) |
