Whew, Woiw!!
2010 workshop is pau.... it was like being in heaven! I'm still on Muai so can't post pictures yet, But I gotta tell y'all, it was truly wonderful. It's sooo nice to be part of this close 'ohana. Of course we missed Keoki, Ed, Bob and the others who weren't able to make it. So good to see those truly new to slack key jumped into it with George and private lessons. Those of us in Level 1 learned Maui Chimes from Kevin Brown playing with the guitar in our laps (but not like steel). Hoo Eee - - Jeff Dennis and David Kamakahi were with us along with their families for the first few days, and then along came Led! I was able to pick up slack key lullaby in the first level 3 he taught.
This year we were also treated to private lessons, much like Keoki's workshops. Now, how fun is that? Yes, Kevin and Jeff were here ALL week!
Melinda and Bwop taught, and made really fine leis for us for our performance at the Maui Slack Key Festival at the MACC. And Joice put some very nice hula together for the boys and girls.... especially loved George's shaka with great attitude at the end.
Herb Ohta jr was here all week as were locals Garret Probstl Jason Jerome.
We have kani ka pila every night. Tuesday was set up for performance night. Oh my, what fine talent we have among the students! and what a treat to be able to be backed up by any and all pros as they desired.
It was so good to see Kevin's family, hear 'Ikaika play; have George's grandson Aaron join us briefly, and get to have Peter d;Aquino come make us laugh.
Be sure when you're on Maui to get tickets to the show on Wednesday nights at the Napili Kai. Thanks to the Mauian, which is more beautiful every year.
Mahalo nui loa especially to Nancy Kahumoku for making it all possible. It was nice her mom Mary and son Jeff joined us for the week as well.
Aloha all! Be sure to check out George's websites, facebook, twitter etc.

Good summary Pua Kai. The workshop is one of the highlights of my year. It was great to wake up to Ledward playing by the pool and Rev. Dennis' talk story is always the best as well as Kevin Brown. I am inspired

AND! My sister Louise was in heaven as well. She danced, played and sang, made new friends and just had a blast. Great going, considering all her physical challenges and severe health issues. Also bought her own ukulele from Jason at Lahaina Music, so she can now return my priceless Po Mahina.

George's workshop is so nice in that it is "inclusive" as opposed to "exclusive". If there were other hotel guests hanging around the perimeter of the kani ka pila, he would invite them to come in and enjoy the music. We've encouraged several people in that way to come and join the workshop the following year. I love the true aloha spirit at this event. People are relaxed, excited and friendly all at the same time.

Old friends were there, it was like a family holiday get-together. Dusty, it was fantastic to see you! Jim and Connie, likewise. Pua Kai, you're special as always. Bwop, thanks for bringing your lovely wife. Andy Admin! shoulda been there! Lorenzo and Pulelehua, what would we do without you and your expertise?

And what about that Slack Key Festival performance! I thought we were great! Getting to meet and play with Liko Martin, standing and performing behind Jeff Peterson, Heb Ohta Jr. George, Kevin Brown, Sterling Seaton, my hubby the bass-player, Wally the Wild Man, it just couldn't get better than that.

I got the chance to chat with Milton Lau, promoter of this event, and he would like to revisit putting on Slack Key Festivals on the mainland. Am already working on the perfect venue....

If only this workshop could go on for a month or so, I'd be delirious.

Julie

The workshop was wonderful!! It was great to return. Mahalo to all of my old and new friends. Jason had a good week. Gerry bought a KoAloha soprano `uke from him, too!

Seems to me that the Aussies, Bob and Madeline, bought an 8-string Kamaka from Jason as well.

He was very good as a beginning ukulele teacher. Thumbs up

I'll just second all the above comments - the workshop was thoroughly enjoyable, and seems to get better every year. It's kinda like a big family reunion, where the new people become instant members!

From the all-star instructors, to George's, Mama's and CJ's food, to the beautiful setting at the Mauian, it all makes for a truly memorable week.

I finally managed to sort through the photos I shot at the workshop and put them online at www.driveby-shooting.com/2010workshop/

Can't wait 'til next year.

Don and I have been eagerly awaiting your photos, Scott. And they are wonderful, as always. However, looking through them was a mixed blessing. It was great to see all our friends, almost like being there. But the emphasis is on "almost." We have huge pangs of regret at not being there. So, we're making our reservations for next year right away. Don't want to miss another year.

The workshop was great. I wish it could go on, but alas, Susan and I are home now. Cynthia, you and Don were missed and we look forward to seeing you both next year. Julie, a slack key festival would be fun. We will see you in St. Helena if not before.

George's workshop is so much fun, so much aloha and the food is sooo ono. The instruction was wonderful. Herb, David, Garrett all did a great job. We will be there again next year and look forward to seeing all our extended ohana.

Connie and I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop. The private lessons were great (I got to play with dennis one-on-one!), and the lessons especially from Jeff, Kevin and Led were inspiring high points. Special thanks to Nancy and George. It was beautiful to visit with our slack key ohana again. Aloha Y'all Jim and Connie Garson

Aloha! I am so looking forward to this year's camp and seeing everybody once again in such a beautiful setting. It always amazes me, seeing everybody year after year, how everybody fits together so nicely into this giant ohana. What a fantastic bunch of people, people I'd want to hang out with even if we weren't making music together.

I'm already putting my uke teaching materials together in expectation of the fun we will have next year. Looking forward to seeing you all once again and growing with you as we play together (and if the food's as ono as last year, we will be growing!). Everybody who comes into the store asking about slack key, I bubble over with enthusiasm for this camp. Hope y'all can make it. Aloha! - Jason
