Come join us in Cleveland during Martin Luther King weekend in January for a hula workshop presented by renown kumu hula Mapuana de Silva. Also so valuable is sharing the mana`o of Kihei de Silva as he teaches us the language and story behind the mele.

Saturday night will feature our annual lu`au with ono food and great dancing by the Merrie Monarch dancers of Halau Mohala `Ilima, including Kapalai`ula de Silva.

E komo mai .

Only a short while until Aunty Mapu and Uncle Kihei hele on to Cleveland in the winter time. (I always told you Aunty Mapu is one tough lady).

Please come and join us at the hula workshop. Music at the ho`ike and lu`au will be provided by previous Ka Himeni Ana winner Kapalai`ula de Silva and friends....and you just might find some bearded Italian guy making music there, too.

Woo-hoo....I am getting excited. I am working on making the name badges for everyone. And we have new stage decorations this year. Now, if only the dresses get done in time. And renting a stand up bass -- Paul took care of care of that. And Uncle Paul is learning the alphabet. He's going to play Pi`apa for the keiki when they do their hula for the ho`ike. And I can't wait to pick Kihei's brain. And can't wait to see you, too, Ka`iulani.

Y'all come!

I meant to say, that if you have never seen these folks do "Hanohano Wailea"... you are really missing something.

Here is Kapalai`ula de Silva dancing this in the 2006 Merrie Monarch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTbISJTbOS4

And here is the halau dancing in 2010 Merrie Monarch -- still `auana, but entirely different:

Music at the workshop will be provided by Mololani, featuring Kapalai`ula de Silva - guitar, vocals; Mahina Duarte - `ukulele, vocals; Anuenue Punua - `ukulele, vocals; U`ilani Bobbitt - upright bass, vocals. And you just might hear some bearded Italian guy, too. (And its not Luciano Pavarotti!)

Paul getting ready to make music during dinner. We had SOUR POI!!!!

This student and her husband came from Canada to join us!

Norm Markowitz and Karen Smith-Cooper just might know this lady, all the way to Cleveland from Santa Cruz.

Here is our hula sister (and TaroPatch sister) from the Rochester, NY area, Ka`iulani Visiko

Here are some of our keiki practicing for the ho`ike.

Here are the ladies of Mololani along with Dr. Sam Taylor, husband of our local halau kumu. Since Mololani does not yet have a CD out, he wanted a good picture that can be on the cover of their first CD. Mololani is Kapalai`ula de Silva - guitar, vocals; Mahina Duarte - `ukulele, vocals; Anuenue Punua - `ukulele, vocals; U`ilani Bobbitt - upright bass, vocals. They make some of the sweetest music you have ever heard -- amazing harmonies. Look for them at the next Ka Himeni Ana.

Here are Paul and I with Aunty Mapuana de Silva, our kumu hula and her husband, famed music historian and linguistics expert, Kihei de Silva. Paul is the shorter bearded guy.

Who says there's no surf in Cleveland,USA. These surfboards were used for stage decoration. One of the ladies in our halau (who is art major) came up with the designs. They are made out of foam insulation board. I think they looked WAY swell.

This is the whole class (except me, I am taking the pictures). I think it was an amazing and worthwhile workshop. I danced until my legs were all a-quiver. I thought kahiko would be easier for me because I would have definite beats when I knew where to put my feet and put my hands, but yikes, go too fast. We learned all mele and `oli this year from Ni`ihau. Uncle Kihei's talk story about the mele were enlightening and interesting and just made me want to research more. Thanks to everyone who came and helped make this an amazing experience. Mark your calendars: next year, same place, same time - Martin Luther King weekend.
