This week on Pakele Live! with Tony Solis we’re excited to bring you the beautiful harmonies of the Ka’ai’ali’i family in their group known as Melelani.
Consisting of family members Kalani Ka’ai’ali’i (dad), Haulani (mom), daughter Kiliana (age 14), son Zane (age 9), and Kalani’s brother-in-law Bill Gould, Melelani was created in 2007 after the passing of Kalani’s Aunty Lana Kawalu and his Grandma Helen (LEGS) Yokoyama, who were original members of the Melelani Serenaders.
[Those who go to the monthly Waimea Valley kani ka pilas hosted by the Abrigo Ohana may remember seeing the Ka’ai’ali’is there. Son Zane is the one who sings "Alika" with Emily.]
In addition to taking over the family legacy of performing traditional Hawaiian music, Melelani has expanded their repertoire to include contemporary Hawaiian and Christian music as well. Known for their beautiful harmonies, the group received widespread acclaim after their 2009 performance at the annual Ka Himeni Ana Hawaiian music competition – a competition that features the nahenahe (sweet, melodious) style of singing and focuses on harmonies performed without the use of amplified instruments. As a result of their Ka Himeni Ana appearance, Melelani has been kept busy playing venues all over Hawai’i, from Waikiki to the Molokai Makahiki and more.
