Michael Keale – Remember
Auntie was so happy when sweet Mike’s CD finally was available. I made Uncle Paul rush right to the computer to order one for us. I was so excited when it came, and even more excited when I read the sweet message Mike wrote on the CD for us. But all that kindness aside, this is a CD worth owning. If you haven’t ordered one or two yet, I urge you to go to his web site, www.mikeale.com to get one for your very own.
Mike’s velvety smooth voice is so perfectly suited to the mix of songs he chose for this recording. He starts out with a nice upbeat ode to `Ahulili, a nice traditional mele. Next is Mai Ae I Ka Hewa – oh what a beautiful version. You will love hearing Mike’s voice as well as the guitar from his equally accomplished brother, Bill. The next few songs are rather jazzy, smooth, and oh so mellow -- a smooth and beautiful I Love You and then – to me, the highlight of the whole CD, Andy Cummings’ Waikiki. I can feel Mike yearning for Waikiki, I can tell he misses O`ahu, and he puts all that love into this song. After that is a lovely Mapuana, so well-suited to Mike’s easy delivery and mellow stylings. It is then followed by Johnny Mercer’s Dream. The next two mele were written by Bill Keale – a mele pana called Kailua Rain with some lovely singing by Bill and a slack key instrumental called Yellow Tang. After that, we are back to some smooth and jazzy Hawaiian music written by Lena Machado – Kamalani O Keaukaha. He starts to wind down the delights with a sweet renditional of Fools Rush In, mellow and lovely without any of the attempts toward rock and roll like Elvis. He merely sings Johnny Mercer’s song in his own inimitable way – slow, sweet and oh so lovely. The recording ends with Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World, a wonderful upbeat way of telling the listening audience that the world is still a lovely place.
He is supported on the recording by a steel guitar player you may recognize: Bobby Ingano, whose gentle touch with the steel guitar just adds to the great sound; by his brother Bill, who plays slack key guitar and supports him with vocals; Dicky Boy Canyohos, who I first saw about a year and a half ago in a video from the Kaka`ako Kanikapila, Kimo Naylon on electric bass and guitar; Joerg Alfter on keyboards, Clay Smith on electric guitar, acoustic piano, keyboards, percussion and bass and by Andy Llanos on slack key guitar. The whole team worked so well to produce a superb recording.
This is the perfect recording to put on the stereo whenever you want a romantic evening at home alone with your ku`uipo or when you just want to chill out and relax. You will sit there amazed at Mike’s amazing voice and be ever so happy you listened to Auntie and went out and bought one.
