Michael Cord has done it again -- released a wonderful DOUBLE album of a master. This time it's Atta Isaacs "the legendary, innnovative slack key master": http://www.mele.com/music/artist/atta+isaacs/the+legendary+innovative+slack+key+master+(08-04-2010)/
A few of the tracks were included in the previously-released CD of Gabby and Atta (Two Slack Key Guitars), but the majority of the tracks on this new CD were vinyl-only.
From the mele.com site, about the new release: Track List & Samples 1. Lei Ohaoha 2. Kohala March 3. Medley * Kokohi * Moani Ke ‘Ala 4. Kolopa 5. Na Molokama 6. Wiliwili Wai 7. Nu‘a O Ka Palai 8. Hualalai 9. How’d You Do? 10. Mele Li‘i 11. Ke Anuenue 12. Sweet Lei Lehua 13. Lahainaluna 14. ‘Akaka Falls 15. Medley * Maika‘i Ka Makani ‘O Kohala * Moani Ke ‘Ala 16. Green Rose Hula 17. Album Notes A reissue of 21 of the most beautiful recordings made by the innovative and influential Slack Key master Atta Isaacs. Atta was best known for his recordings with the great Slack Key guitarist Gabby Pahinui, for his prolific backup work with many artists, and for his beautiful playing, often jazz influenced, in his C Major Tuning. The 2-CD set includes a 24-page booklet with rare photos, bio, and slack key tunings.

Very cool. With no record player in my house, I always get excited for Cord International reissues! A true slack key legend. |

This is incredibly good news, and I'll be ordering this even though I have all but two tracks on vinyl or earlier reissues--just those two and the booklet make the set worth having.
On a related topic, I'd say it's worth keeping a turntable around precisely because so much of the history of slack key--and of the rest of Hawaiian music--hasn't made it onto CD yet. In the case of Atta, much of his work was as a sideman and as part of the backing-band version of the Sons of Hawai`i (for example, for Marcella Kalua and Charles K. L. Davis), and much of this has to be sought out on vinyl. I'm still filling the gaps in my collection of Atta material, mostly by scrounging around on eBay.

Russell, I wholeheartedly agree. I admire the fervor for the reissues, and I admire the record companies that do the reissues despite that they are a financially losing proposition. But at the rate those companies are moving, for a lot of titles we are going to continue to be listening to the vinyl for the foreseeable future.
One of my favorite works by Atta as a sideman is on Ohta San's "Pacific Potpourri." Gorgeous. That has fortunately been reissued. What has not been reissued - and probably never will be - is the album of slack key and steel guitar duets by Atta and Barney Isaacs called "Hau'oli." And that is why we keep the turntables.
