Wanda, such a pleasure to meet you in person on O`ahu last week. I wanted to ask you but didn't have time: What's your secret (other than just investing the time and hard work) to finding the choicest YouTube videos week after week? I'm not very computer-savvy. If I type a broad term in the little YouTube search box like "slack-key" or "Hawai`i", I get a gazillion choices. And sometimes the title of a video might not have the term I search for, so it doesn't show up in the search. No need to give away any proprietary secrets, but a little hint, maybe?

Hey Mike
It was a pleasure to meet you in person last week too. I usually type in either Slack Key or Ki ho'alu or Hawaiian Music or Kanikapila or whatever Hawaiian mele that might interest me in the search window. When the search results come up on the bar just above the video results you have some search options.Because I've been viewing videos in these categories for a long time I'm more interested in more recently uploaded videos. So I'll click "Videos uploaded this week" or "Videos uploaded this month" narrows it down a lot.Using this method i don't think I've missed any new slack key videos in the last 2 years.

It was a pleasure to meet you as well, Mike. It was a whirlwind, yeah? Patrick had you guys running as fast as he usually does (which is WAAAY too fast for me)
Mike - Dukie has the secret. It is all in what you use for search terms and then how you limit or sort your searches. Like Duke, I have been watching You Tube long enough that I am usually only interested in the newer videos (since I do not wish to bore you with ones you may have already seen). Sometimes, though, I am interested in a specific song or a specific entertainer and I limit my search to "Hi`ilawe" for example or "Raymond Kane" for further example.
What makes a difference to finding a video is how the person who posts the video describes it in the title or what tags they assign to it.
That being said, if anyone posts a video and wants to make sure that we see it for the Mele Monday listing, the best chances are if you tag it as "slack key" or "ki hoalu" or "Hawaiian Music". If I just search `ukulele, I get all kinds of stuff.
It does not take computer savvy. Lord knows no one has ever accused me of that (right Braddah Ed?). |

Many thanks, Duke and Wanda. I did not even know about the "limits" on the searches. Looks like it all still depends on what word is in the title though, huh? So for example, if I type in "Makana" (or "Matt" or "Swalinkavich"), it won't give me the video you posted from the slack key festival because the title doesn't include those names.
BTW, if I just put "slack key" into the search window, the first video to pop up is one of my favorites--Duke's rendering of the "Punahoa Special" in Bb Maunaloa tuning. That one's on my "try to learn it one day" list. |

Hey Mike
Let's say you type "Slack Key" in the search window. Just above the first video result that comes up in the upper left hand corner you'll see "Search options" I usually click on "Upload date" then either "This week" or "This month"....narrows it down significantly.
Thanks for the kind words concerning my "Punahoa Special" rendition. It's really only smoke & mirrors. I'm not producing all that sound on one guitar although a lot of viewers have that impression. I actually layed down a rhythm track & played over it.It's not as difficult as it seems. More or less just a series of rapid pull-offs on the bottom string. I don't even use a strict alternating bass pattern on it. Don't remember any pinches either. Many have asked for tabs but I haven't taken the time to transcribe it because it's so repetitive and actually easy to figure out. Here's a 23 year old from North Carolina who figured it out note for note just by watching my YouTube video proving my point. He plays it a lot faster than I do too.

Thanks, Duke. I've tried smoking and playing in front of a mirror, but never helped my playing
In June I got to hear Jeff Peterson discuss this song, and Bb Maunaloa tuning in general. Yeah, that's what I recall-- lots of rapid pull-offs from the highest-pitched string and lots of dependence on the rest of the open strings.
Since practically all I know is Taropatch tuning, I think my ear sort of finds this Bb Maunaloa comforting or "familiar", because it has the same relationship of the two lowest-pitched strings (tonic note on 5th string, dominant on 6th). |
