This week on Pakele Live! with Tony Solis we’re hosting Nāpua Makua’s (formerly Greig) O’ahu CD release party for her second album, “Mōhalu.” Nāpua’s special guest will be the incomparable 12 string guitar master Mike Kaawa. There will also be hula by her sister, daughters, and members of her halau: Halau Na Lei Kaumaka o Uka.

A graduate of Kamehameha Schools and UH Hilo, Nāpua is a teacher (at Kamehameha and Seabury schools on Maui), a Kumu Hula and a musician. She teaches hula, oli and performing arts at Kamehameha, and Hawaiian language (ōlelo Hawai’i) and performing arts at Seabury. As a kumu hula, she teaches her haumana (hula students) Monday through Thursday evenings. And somehow she also manages to find time to write, record and perform her music and be a wife and mother, among other things.

Nāpua grew up with music and hula. Her mother is a musician, and Nāpua and her sister were her dancers. She always loved to sing, and received more formal training in voice at Kamehameha. She began receiving recording offers at a young age, but although she sang on all of her mother’s albums and performed a duet with Kaumakaiwa Kanakaole on his second album, she didn’t record her own album until 2007. It was worth the wait - that album, entitled “Pihana,” earned her Female Vocalist of the Year honors at the 2008 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards.

“Mōhalu” (to be at ease, comfortable, at liberty) is her anxiously-awaited second album, filled with personal songs that describe Nāpua’s goals and dreams, past struggles and current joys.

Join host Tony Solis for Pakele Live! on Thursday, September 23 from 6-8 p.m. HST in the Pakele Lounge at the Ala Moana Hotel (410 Atkinson Dr., Honolulu). There is no cover or minimum, although your purchase of two drinks or soft drinks helps ensure the continuation of the Pakele Live! concert series. All ages are welcome, and free parking is available next door at Ala Moana Shopping Center.
