Well you sure can tell it is no longer summer time in Ohio. This is one cold, cold morning. Brrr. I am off to get my hot cup of tea while you guys all have a swell time listening to the music videos that showcase Hawaiian music.

Jesse Tinsley – with a very poignant song and mo`olelo - Earl Finch Hula.
I heard this song on Kimo Alama Keaulana's album "Hula Lives", a great collection of Hawaiian songs done with his group "Lei Hulu". The song honors Earl Finch, a man who welcomed the Japanese soldiers from Hawaii in his business in Mississippi where the young soldiers were training to fight in WWII. They were shunned and despised by most other people on the mainland (we were fighting the Japanese, after all) and Finch was later welcomed to Hawaii in the 1950s with great affection (and this song, presumably, though I'm not sure when it was written).
He's an interesting character, though there is little known about him. He was 4F, that is, unfit for military service, but no exact reason is known. He was tall and physically fit, though prematurely bald. He always wore a suit and was only a handful of years older than the recruits from Hawai'i, but they all called him Mr. Finch. He was a successful business man, running several enterprises in Mississippi in the post-war years. One explanation for his exclusion from the war is that it is likely he was gay, and may have been a social outcast in his own community, much like the Japanese soldiers. He later moved to Hawai'i, perhaps because being gay is not a big deal there. But he became disillusioned and died of a heart attack in the 1960s at the age of 49. Very little else is known about him, but he's a central character in the experiences of Hawaiian-born soldiers, like Sen. Daniel Inouye, who went on to distinguish themselves in the European theater of battle in WWII. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0bOSl9bJ8w

One of the Virginia players looks like SlackKeyHaole. Even has one of those double -puka guitars. The vids were posted by vawahine. Sounds familiar, but maybe just 'cause of watching YouTube till eyes bug out.
