Our guest this week on Pakele Live! with Tony Solis is ‘Ike Pono – Stan Oshiro, Bobby Yu and Michael Lowe – who play traditional Hawaiian music with an up-beat twist and three-part harmony.
Born and raised in Honolulu, Stan’s interest in music began in the mid-1970’s, when he took classes from renowned ‘ukulele instructor Roy Sakuma. However, it wasn’t until he was away from home serving in the US Air Force that his interest in Hawaiian music and culture really blossomed. It was while he was stationed in Germany that he met other Hawaiians and began performing at the NCO clubs. He has played for Hula Halau, as well as groups such as the Nu’uanu Brothers. He has been with ‘Ike Pono for over 10 years, and continues to dig his roots deeper and nurture his love for traditional Hawaiian music.
Bobby is a local boy, raised in Palolo Valley, who began playing Hawaiian music in the 1970’s working at the Heritage Theatre in King’s Alley. He was influenced by his older brother, Johnny Yu, his cousin Steve Ma’i’i, and Randy Lorenzo, Kenny Wild and many other bass players. He is also a songwriter who is frequently inspired when he’s flying. ‘Ike Pono songs such as Full Circle Rainbow and White Mountain of Clouds are examples of the sky’s influence.
Although raised on the mainland in the great Northwest, Michael discovered his love for and has been playing Hawaiian music since childhood. After serving his country in the US Air Force, Michael settled in Hawai’i to pursue a deeper understanding of his Hawaiian roots in music. Under the tutelage of the late Raymond Kane, Michael learned the finer arts of slack key guitar and toured with Uncle Raymond for 3 years before joining ‘Ike Pono. He has also toured with Akoni Malacas, the KCCN FM 100 All-Star Band, Norm Thompson, and others.
