I'm Jim Scott - from Salt Lake City, UT. I visited Hilo a couple of years ago and heard Slack Key for the first time. I was so inspired, I bought a guitar and have since learned some Slack Key. (Ozzie taught me via DVD of course).
I plan on a lifetime of Slack Key - it is the only music I have listened to for these past two years and I love it.

I feel like I know you so well. YouTube is the greatest boon to Slack Key. I can't tell you how much it helps to watch others play.
Don't know what I would do without it. |

Slack Key is like therapy. Someone here said slackers develop a bad case of TDD (Tension Deficit Disorder). I think that was it, anyway even if I am wrong about the exact acronym, you get the idea.

| Yes - a day without Slack Key sucks. And, unfortunately my wife says, I've been developing a bad case of "island time". |

Hi Jim. Welcome.
Of all the side effects of Slack Key for your wife to worry about, Island Time may be the tamest.
For instance:
- A really bad case of GAS can develop.
- You might find yourself talking to, best case your wife, worst case other old guys, about your finger nails.
- You might replace really important things in your memory with extremely trivial seeming but important facts to you (like the increase in tension created by Medium-Light strings going from Bb maunaloa to DADF#AD tuning.

Strange you should mention fingernails. I have really, really thin nails - dismal for finger style.
I ran across a website with a guy showing how to use nylon (yes, NYLON) nail for guitar. Seemed the thing to do, so I have three fingers on my right hand with nylon nails. They work great.
Yes, I sometimes stress about my nails - who would'a thunk. |

I've got thin nails too. I'd like to make the excuse that that is why my fingerstyle playing is not very good. I think it's an element, but there are guys like Tommy Emannuel who plays with the pads of his fingers, and he seems to get by OK without using nails.
I've had acrylic nails put on a few times. The first was just before my first Aloha camp. It made a tremendous difference - suddenly as well as not breaking all the time, there was a big improvement in volume and tone. It felt quite life changing. Sadly, there remains the problem of being able to move your fingers in the right way, which I'm still not great at.
I'd recommend anyone with weedy nails to give them a try. They do make picking your nose more difficult, though. |

As a window washer, my hands are wet all the time. I keep my nails short, but the callouses on the finger pads work well.
I just don't play ki ho'alu for myself, I play it in behalf of the people that have to be around me during the rest of the day. |

I started with Ozzie and Mark Nelson books, concentrating on taro patch tuning. I thought I would stick with that for a few months then move on to other tunings but here I am almost 4 years later and I am still playing in taro patch because there are so many different styles that I have yet to feel like I have even scratched the surface. Like the blues, there may be only a handful of chords in a song but there are a thousand different ways to play it. Good luck with your playing and keep it up, it is like therapy.

| Mahalo kihoaluatl, for your words of encouragement. Slack Key is therapy for me. I play every day - nice way to end a day. I played the first year in Taro Patch, even though I wanted to learn other tunings. I am biting them off one at a time. |
