This week on Pakele Live! with Tony Solis we’re excited to present three accomplished musicians who, while they are exceptional alone, are somehow even better when they perform together: Herb Ohta, Jr., Patrick Landeza and Keoki Kahumoku!
Regular Pakele Live! viewers have doubtless seen ‘ukulele master Herb Ohta, Jr. on our show before – we’ve been honored to host several CD release parties for him over the past few years, and he’s been a featured performer at CD release parties for others as well as on our benefit shows and special showcases. This year marked Herb’s 20th year in the music business, during which time he’s released eight solo albums, seven duets (with his father, the great Herb Ohta-San Ohta, and with multiple Grammy®Award winners Daniel Ho and Keoki Kahumoku), appeared on over 50 other recordings, co-authored two ‘ukulele instructional books, received numerous Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award nominations, and won several Hawai’i Music Awards. He travels the world performing and giving both group and private ‘ukulele lessons. He continues to be beloved by his many fans and well-respected by fellow musicians.
Slack key artist Patrick Landeza may also be familiar to Pakele Live! viewers – we hosted a CD release party for him in July. In addition to becoming a familiar and sought-after face in Hawai’i, he is also well-known to many on the mainland – not only for his music (and cooking prowess!), but as the founder of Landeza Presents, a company he founded to bring slack key guitar (and introduce a variety of Hawai’i’s musicians) to mainland markets. Patrick himself was introduced to slack key at age 15 through the recordings of the legendary Raymond Kane, who soon became his mentor. Other mentors included Dennis Kamakahi, George Kuo, and the late Sonny Chillingworth. By age 19 Patrick was opening San Francisco bay area concerts for Hawaiian artists such as Israel "Bruddah Iz" Kamakawiwo'ole, Cecilio & Kapono, Keali'i Reichel and HAPA. He also attended the many slack key performances sponsored by Dancing Cat Records in and around the area, where he become known simply as “the kid” among the visiting slack key musicians and where he always found a seat at the jam sessions frequently held before, during and after concerts. Patrick has released 4 solo albums, as well as an instructional slack key guitar DVD.
This will be FIVE TIME Grammy® Award winner Keoki Kahumoku’s first Pakele Live! appearance. A fifth generation slack-key guitarist, Keoki began performing with his father, George Kahumoku, Jr., and his uncle, Moses Kahumoku, in 1990 at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel on the Big Island of Hawai’i. He soon developed a dream to preserve Hawai’i’s rich cultural heritage by reaching and teaching the keiki o ka aina. He began by teaching ‘ukulele, starting with informal lessons, then progressing to ‘ukulele and slack key guitar workshops and formal lessons throughout Hawai’i and the mainland. He also released an instructional DVD. In addition to his workshops, Keoki started the annual Youth ‘Ukulele Players Contest in 1995 in Maui County. In the same year, he was featured on his first recording, “Ho`oilina -The Legacy” with his father, followed by projects with Herb Ohta, Jr. as well as several solo albums. In 2005, he started his now-annual Kahumoku 'Ohana Hawaiian Music and Lifestyles Workshop, a week-long event held on Hawai’i island that provides participants the opportunity to learn slack key guitar, 'ukulele, steel guitar, song writing, music theory, hula, lei making, chant, Hawaiian song and choir, pahu drum carving, lauhala and coconut palm weaving, food preparation and traditional crafts, all from top masters. Proceeds from the workshop benefit the Center for Hawaiian Music Studies, a non-profit organization founded by Keoki that provides instruments, 'ukulele building workshops, music and cultural education year-round to Hawai’i island children.
In addition to appearing on five of the six Grammy® winning albums since the Hawaiian Music category was established, Keoki received a 2005 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award for his participation on the Compilation Album of the Year and he was nominated for a Hawai’i Music Award for one of his solo albums (“Liko”). Keoki also received the 2003 Duane Ebata Award in support and recognition of promising artists who further the development of Asian Pacific American performing arts. Wayne Harada, entertainment writer for the Honolulu Advertiser, said of him, "Keoki Kahumoku is one of his generation's masters of the stroke and the voice."
Join host Tony Solis as we welcome Herb, Patrick and Keoki to the Pakele Live! stage on Thursday, December 9 from 6-8 p.m. HST in the Pakele Lounge at the Ala Moana Hotel (410 Atkinson Dr., Honolulu). LOL! Thanks, for finding this, Wanda. It reminds me of Clark Kent-- stepping into a phone booth and coming out in an aloha shirt. I see a future in action films here. |
