I got this email yesterday: ------------------------------------------------------------------- "Dear Hawaiian music friends:
Last year I contacted most of you with regard to a gig in Japan that was in need of rescue. Everything worked out on that one, thank you, and now I am putting out the word that this same gig will is looking for a duo or trio to play during the months of June, July and August this year.
The most desired instrument is steel guitar, played in the traditional style. The Japanese people don't know much about contemporary Hawaiian music, in my understanding. They expect traditional Hawaiian music along with a mix of other things. I am thinking that if a steel player cannot be found to take the job, it will be open to a configuration without steel. So, if you don't have a steel player in your duo or trio but think you would like to do this job, please do let me know.
The gig should pay from $2000 to $2500 per month per musician. Each musician has a room in the hotel and 3 meals a day provided. The gig is 5 x 30 minute sets per night, 6 nights per week at the ANA Hotel in Matsuyama, Japan. Transportation provided, of course.
If you have interest please contact me through this email address. If this job is not for you but know someone who might be interested, please let them know about it.
With best wishes for all, Al DiMarco al @ aldimarco.com -------------------------------------------------------------------
I wrote back to all, and told him:
Thanks Al, Nice to know that there are still places in the world that appreciate good Hawaiian Steel Guitar. Gigs are hard to find in Hawaii. On the other hand, I and my trio members are all aging, married, and have committments. If I was young and single, this would be something I would jump on. As my band member said; "$2500/month won't even cover alimony when my wife hears I want to go to Japan without her for 3 months". Out of kindness, please take us off your email list. Best of luck. If I run across any young steel players, I will pass this on! Aloha, -Konabob

Hey oh "Slipry One"! Are you still in Kailua? Hope so!!! I did not go to Japan last year. Same story, if I were single and care free it would be terrific. But, alas, I gotta maintain my existence! : )
Best of luck with this you guys! I hope someone nabs it! |

We're back home. We were only there for a week, and the weather conspired against us, as you know. I'll be in Kona for the Aloha Camp, along with Alan Akaka, Konabob, Mark, and Chris Kennison from Colorado via HSGA. I'll be back on 4/7 for a month, staying in Kaneohe this time because Brenda's son is getting married, and she's filling up the rentals with guests from the mainland. I'll see you for sure then. |
