This week Pakele Live! with Tony Solis presents the third of five special “Kōkua Japan” shows to benefit our friends affected by the earthquake and tsunami. Our first two specials raised over $12,000 and drew the most viewers in the show’s four year history!

This week’s guests:

Jeff Teves Quartet (with Jeff Au Hoy, Hale Seabury and Brandon Souza) - Jeff’s 2009 CD “Lovely Sapphire of the Tropics” was described by him as some of his all-time favorite “Hawaiian and Hapa Haole music of yesteryear, revisited.” His musical lineage began with his mother Ethelynne, Myra English and Billy Hew Len, and later Kahauanu Lake. Jeff has been a mainstay in Waikiki for over 35 years. He played in the group Kuliaikanu'u with Tote Conching and Henry Barrett, and he has also played at the Sheraton Waikiki's lu’au with Myra English, at the Surf Room with the late Kahauanu Lake, and more recently you can find him playing around town with his Quartet and sitting in with Cyril Pahinui and Jeff Au Hoy at Kani Ka Pila Grille on Wednesday nights. In addition to the current lineup, Tote Conching, Henry Barrett, Keoni Souza and Paul Kim have all played with Jeff at various times as the Jeff Teves Quartet.

Jon Yamasato and David Kamakahi – both multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winning artists, Jon first became known as the vocalist and guitar player for the hugely popular group Pure Heart (with Jake Shimabukuro and Lopaka Colon). He has since recorded with Justin Young and Herb Ohta, Jr., has produced and recorded several solo albums and has produced albums for a number of bands. David, son of the legendary Dennis Kamakahi, is a successful musician in his own right with two solo albums to date. Self taught on the ‘ukulele, he was awarded the Pono Beamer Award for excellence in the field of Hawaiian Music upon graduation from Kamehameha Schools. In addition to performing with his father, he played with the group Na Oiwi and has been featured on albums by a number of well known Hawai’i musicians, including Keahiwai, Hui Aloha, Jon and Justin and the Lilo and Stitch 2 soundtrack. He also played on the Grammy nominated album “Hawaiian Slack Key Kings.” Jon and David currently play with Darin Leong in the group “Pineapple Tree.”

Kainani Kahaunaele (with Shawn Pimental, Alika Boy Kalauli IV and Michael Grande) – raised by her grandparents in the rural community of Anahola, Kauaʻi, Kainani was surrounded by four generations of musical talent. Her love for Hawaiian music was infused at an early age, playing ʻukulele and harmonizing with her Kahaunaele, Pānui and Kaluahine families. While earning her B.A in Hawaiian Studies with an emphasis in Hawaiian language at UH Hilo, this talented songstress started singing professionally and composing traditional songs (haku mele) as Hawaiian language curriculum for ʻAha Pūnana Leo (a pioneering Hawaiian language revitalization program) that encouraged and promoted the documentation of Hawaiian history through mele. A multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winner, her proficiency in haku mele has drawn many renowned artists such as Weldon Kekauoha, Aaron Salā and Nā Leo to record her original songs. In addition to her solo albums, she has also recorded with many artists from Hawaiʻi including Kaumakaʻiwa Kanakaʻole, Kekuhi Kanahele and Shilo Pā.
