Yeah, I like that! Thanks Mitch.
Unfortunately, I couldn't make the Tommy Emmanuel show in NYC last week. Sounds like an amazing line up you have there. |

I don’t how many Taropatchers are familiar with Tommy Emmanuel, the Australian guitarist extraodinaire. I just saw him live for the first time on Wednesday in Modesto, CA and was completely blown away. I’ve seen him on TV and YouTube but nothing can compare to seeing and hearing him live.
He played an eclectic set that included country (e.g., Chet Atkins influenced licks), R&B, a cool Beatles medley, original tunes (I especially liked “Angelina,” a beautiful instrumental written for one of his daughters), some vocals, and awesome percussive techniques.
Just when you thought you’ve seen the most amazing, high energy licks, he’d come back with something more wild and unexpected. I was mesmerized. One of his coolest numbers took us on a “journey” to the Australian outback, where he mimicked the sounds of nature (rain, thunder, wind, animal sounds, streams, aboriginal rhythms) with his guitar and percussive effects. Although I saw him do this on YouTube, hearing it live was an amazing experience. As he explained, he tells stories through music and sound. I closed my eyes and I was in the Outback.
Anyhow, I see that Tommy Emmanuel will be one of the headliners at the inaugural Los Angeles International Guitar Festival (July 4 weekend), conceived and organized by Taropatch’s own Mitch Chang. Props to Bruddah Mitch for assembling such a stellar lineup that also includes Jimmie Vaughn, Lawrence Juber, Dick Dale, and of course Uncle Cyril Pahinui.
Aloha, Doug

Aloha, If you are in the L.A. area this should be a great concert. I did play with TOMMY EMMANUEL in Nashville for several years. He is a wonderful guitar player and the rest of the show should be good too. I will bring my Kani Ka PIla boys with me so along with the slack key Peter Moon on ukulele and Jeff Ah Hoy on Steel. Look forward to seeing you all there. |

Cyril really wowed the crowd! Coming out after the Gypsy Jazz quartet and just before Laurence Juber, I thought it flowed very nicely. Peter Moon Jr on ukulele and Jeff Au Hoy on steel, the three of them sounded amazing! Those of you who attended, please share your thoughts on the evening, would love to hear from you.
