This week on Pakele Live! with Tony Solis our guest is Bill Wynne and friends – Jeff Au Hoy, Ocean Kaowili, and Hale Seabury - plus some special surprise guests!
Although born in Philadelphia and raised on the east coast, Bill has been immersed in Hawaiian music and culture since birth. Hawaiian music came into the family home through radio and records and captivated his father who learned to play steel guitar - becoming a first-call musician for local hula shows and backyard pa'ina. Bill's mom was a talented vocalist, bassist, and danced hula. By the time Bill was born, his family was already favored by the local Hawaiian community on the east coast. Bill learned to play 'ukulele, slack key guitar, bass, and steel guitar by emulating the legends he heard on the many Hawaiian music records his local aunties and uncles brought home for him from their trips to Hawai'i - eventually amassing an enviable collection of more than 2,500 Hawaiian music records, many rare and out-of-print. From these recordings Bill also learned to sing Hawaiian songs, many long-forgotten even by previous generations of Hawaiians. Today, Bill knows hundreds of Hawaiian songs by heart - making him a crowd favorite wherever he goes. In 1994, he had the privilege and honor of opening for legends of Hawaiian music – Loyal Garner, Dennis Pavao, Robi Kahakalau, Cyril Pahinui and The Makaha Sons - at New York's venerable Carnegie Hall.
Bill's first love is Hawaiian falsetto singing. In 2005, he won the Aloha Festivals Falsetto Contest and a Hula Records recording contract. Since then, Bill has performed at various places around Hawai’i, including Halekulani Hotel with Jeff Au Hoy and Keola Chan, and at Chiko's with Keao Costa and Hale Seabury-Akaka. He’s also had the honor of sitting in with his musical heroes, including Genoa Keawe, Mahi Beamer, Richard Ho'opi'i and Jerry Santos.
After years of study, Bill possesses the uncanny ability to identify legends of slack key, steel guitar, and 'ukulele by ear. Most recently, Bill put this rare skill and his vast collection of Hawaiian music to use when he hosted the radio program "Ho'olohe Hou" for the short-lived 50th State Radio in Las Vegas. He continues to look for a new home for his unique program.

Bill, a big mahalo for a very entertaining and unpredictable show. Who would have thought, "Hoboken meets Honolulu?" Terrific musicians and musicianship. Enjoy the rest of your honeymoon!
