Ok, this is spooky. The time-space continuum has been seriously breached somehow, and 5 days have gone by in what seems like 3. All day long, I heard people saying that the week has gone by way too quickly... I guess it is the price you pay for having a great time.
Friday, I spent much of my time watching campers making last minute changes to their performance pieces or practicing the tricky parts of songs. Many of my favorite moments from Friday involved turning a corner while roaming around the resort and coming across one or two people working together to perfect their songs.
Sammi Fo showed up as a Special Guest of camp. She has been a hula dancer since Elvis Presley days (she did actually dance in one of his movies) and has a very graceful and unique hula style. She has a lot of history with both the Beamer family, and also with Robyn Kneubhel (Robyn danced in one of her dance troupes years ago), so we heard some great stories about being a top Hawaiian entertainer in the heyday of Waikiki. She is the (new) widow of the legendary Buddy Fo (of Buddy Fo and the Invitations fame). It was just wonderful to be with her. And Keola asked her to stay another day!
We had a brief visit from Keoki Kahumoku. He couldnʻt stay long because he had a cow waiting in his truck. (You would think that the valet would have taken care of that so he could stay longer.)
It was Beamer Concert Night, and it was wonderful. Just a fantastic, awe-inspiring evening. Keola and bassoonist Marsha Schweitzer teamed up again to present a beautiful instrumental version of He Punahele Nô `Oe - by Albert Nahale`a. Before performing the song, Marsha told an amazing story of the connection of the song to both the Beamers and to the family of the songwriter. Slack key and bassoon are not two instruments that you often get to hear together - letʻs just say it works. It always leaves us wanting to hear more. Beautiful hulas by Moana and Sammi. Hilarious hulas by Kaliko and Moana,
As the "Three Amigos from Punahou" joined Keola on stage, Kamehameha Schools graduate, Keola, introduced them by doing a spoof version of the Punahou fight song. So funny. The tongue-in-cheek rivalry, I am sure, will never end. Their voices and instrumental style blended in some sweet traditional favorites. So "nahenahe"...
Kaliko had told me several times during the week that he had to run up to Keolaʻs room to practice something. Keola had written a couple of songs just for this evening. Well, the moment arrived. Moana announced that all cameras and recording devices were to be turned off. We were all sworn to secrecy, and the (hilarious) songs began. The first song, I can only describe as a tribute to the psyche of a 15 year old female, done in Keolaʻs spot-on mimic style. It featured fluffy poetic images. (And involved references to a large anthurium.) The second song, performed with the help of Kaliko and Moana, was a glimpse of the joys of air travel, and particularly to a governmental body that works so hard to keep us safe from ourselves. I have not laughed so hard in many years. OK, sorry. That is all I can tell you unless I enroll in the FBIʻs Witness Protection Program.
I want to thank Greg Herbst, Carol Master, and Chris Yeaton for helping me set up and take down the sound equipment for all of the shows. It is a big job, and is usually done while all of the other campers are sipping cold beverages and watching the sunset, or as the other campers are heading off to sleep.
I also want to thank all of the campers who have talked to me about their experiences and shared their music with me. I have a day & a half left to get to know a few more of you, and I hope that many of you will make plans to come back to my home town.
Aloha, -Konabob
