Aloha e taropatch.net Ohana! I hope y'all who went to the Aloha Camp had a super fun time and have many stories to tell us soon.
I gotta story to tell ~ my car broke down and is in da shop so my kids and I rode our blade-scooters to swimming lessons 3 miles away. On the way home I crashed and fractured my left hand. Tomorrow, Tuesday, I have to have surgery and get 2-3 pins put in. I'm nervous as all get out, but the worst is that I can't play guitar!!! For 6 weeks!!!
So, the moral of the story is Gear Up with a helmet, wrist, elbow & kneepads if ya wanna play rough. I discovered I'm not Super Woman after all. If I was geared up like I had my kids geared up I'd have taken the fall, no problem. Rats! By the way, this all happened on my birthday.

Aloha Stacey, dJango Reinhardt, a pioneering Jazz guitarist only had three fingers on his left hand. Looks like you've got two usable ones. Maybe a time to learn to play slide.

Stacey,
How tragic! Take care and visualize your hand healing and playing perfectly. And like Terry and Eric say, learn to play "lap steel" style. |

Happy Birthday, eh? Sorry to hear about your hand. I guess we're all "skating on thin ice." There's a lot of intersting (well, actually its boring, but informative) research on how the mind/body works to learn things. It is true that if you can visualize in detail how to play a piece, your mind will begin to program the neural pathways. Athletes have been doing that for years. If that doesn't work and you want to try that slide stuff, I've got some materials and tapes that might help. Most of all, try not to beat yourself up. Malama pono (take care) Raymond |

Aloha e Stacy,
My sympathies!!! I would feel traumatized if I couldn't use my left hand!
The suggestions above to do mental visulaizations of playing are a really good idea. It really does help in learning a piece you are working on. There was some famous pianist (Glen Gould??) who said he spent 90% of his practice time away from the piano.
E malamo pono i kou lima hema, e Stacy! [take good care of your left hand, Stacy!]

Hi Stacey,
Sorry to hear about your injury. Hope it heals well and quickly.
Hmmm, got to thinking about what I would work on if I could not use my left hand for 6 weeks. Maybe some music theory? And learning the slack key tunings fretboard - where all the G chords are, D7, C, E, A, etc.
Get well soon, |

Aloha e Eric, Terry, Dusty, Craig, Raymond, Sarah, Andy, Pauline & Peter! Mahalo nui loa for all of your sweet get well wishes!!! You've all cheered me up a lot! Thanks for all the tips too. Yes, it is a perfect opportunity to study chords, music theory, visualization, etc. Looks like I'd better try some slide guitar too ~ maybe I could slide with my cast! Just kidding!
Terry sez:

Wow! I didn't know Django was missing a finger. Also, Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead was missing his right middle finger.
Peter sez:

Luckily, the pins will eventually come out.
Pauline sez:

I got my t-shirt from Dancing Cat Records. You can get one too: http://www.dancingcat.com/ezstore/
Thanks again for all your well wishes! You guys are da best! |

Aloha Stacey, You still may BE SUPERWOMAN! Even Superman had Kryptonite to deal with! Now you know what to stay away from! Lots of music to listen to, and I'm all for that slide idea-you can try it out with an extension nut, see how you like it! Get better fast, and make sure you get some Physical Therapy when the cast comes off! And, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! |

Aloha Stacey,
Just to make you feel better: A few years ago I went to the SF Blues Festival and saw an amazing blues player who had no hands, playing outside on the street. He had a bar attached to his left srm stump and some kind of picking setup on his right arm. He had a lap steel with a small amp and drew a large crowd. I was humbled. |

Stacey,
Sorry for the late message, but it hurts to see you picture! Reminds me of when I had a multiple compound fracture of my left arm. I can still feel the pain when I think about it (and when I look at your picture) and my hand tingles and goes to sleep if I play guitar for more than 15-20 minutes straight.
Too bad this happened not long after you got your new guitar!!

I remember seeing a performer on video (Hawaiian Rainbow perhaps?) who had a bar attached to what was left of his left arm. He was really good as I recall.
