My son, he is 9 years old really wants to play slack key like dad Does any one have any idea what I could start him out on my tabs are a little to advanced for him and I do not want to lose his interest any help would be great.
Keoki Kahumoku has a great intro to slack key DVD. This along with the traditional look, listen and imitate (to you and others) should get him started. Here's a link: Keoki's DVD
Try "Kani Ki Ho`alu" from Ozzie's book...my 10-year-old picked that up without much effort. It's good for kids because you're only fretting one string at a time. (He picked up chimes easily, and the only real trouble he had was the slide from the 4th to 5th fret. There are ways around that though, practice being only one of them!)
The most important thing is to make sure he has a guitar he can play comfortably. My son uses my parlor guitar and it's the perfect size for him. He can play a larger guitar if he tries, but it's not nearly as comfortable or easy for him.
Craig My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can.
