Barry Flanagan has dreamt of one day reforming the popular group that came to define some of the best of contemporary Hawaiian music. The multi-Hoku Award-winning troupe hit big in 1994 with their groundbreaking debut recording. Along the way Flanagan crafted such gems as Lei Pikake, Kuu Lei, Kuuipo Manoa, In the Rain.
With successive album releases, Hapa blossomed dramatically on all levels, from song writing, vocal interplay and musicianship to production and artistic vision.
Now Flanagan hopes to rekindle the magic of Hapa with a new partner, Nathan Aweau. A former lead singer with the Ali'is, and bass player, band arranger and vocalist with Don Ho for 13 years, Aweau just won Na Hoku Hanohano awards for 2003 Male Vocalist of the Year and Song of the Year for the beautiful "E Apo Mai."
In addition to Hapa we are fortunate to have Kumu Hula Charles Kaupu. He has earned the rite of passage in the traditional sense of graduation called an 'uniki through a process called 'ai-lolo which literally means to 'eat brains' a symbolic eating ritual of a consecrated food source, after which the graduation performance is showcased. This rite took place in 1979 and he has been teaching chant and dance these many years.
He first became a part of the musical duo Hapa in 1993 and continues to travel and perform with Barry and Nathan today.
Performing as well will be the ever popular Ernie Cruz Jr. Ernie has earned his own rite as a Hawaiian performing. He was a member of the popular duo Kaau Crater Boys and has performed on tour with his family (Ernie Cruz Sr and John Cruz) and many other local artists which include Amy Hanaialii Gilliom. In 2002 he was named Male Vocalist of the Year for the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards for his album Portraits.
We here in San Diego are fortunate to have HAPA perform for us for the first time in many years.

See, this is why it's dangerous to rely on a Hawaiian-English dictionary...according to mine "ai-lolo" translates as "crazy sex". |
Craig My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can. |

Aloha,
Change in guest artist for the Hapa Tour. Ernie Cruz Jr. will not be on the tour. Replacing Ernie on twelve string guitar will be the very talented Eric Gilliom (Amy Hanaialii Gillioms brother). The beautiful dancer Jackie Booth will be their guest dancer.

The seats for Hapa are limited to the M-U Rows. There are still great seats left, but it is sure to sell out.
