I love the taropatch!! Yesterday I found a website www.alanhorvath.com he uses the open g taropatch tuning but tuned the 6th string up to a G making the 5th and 6th strings the same note but different octaves. I have finallly found the tuning that fully pleases my soul. Has anyone else tried this? Let me know what you think. Anyone interested in playing for fun? I live in Stockton CA. Peace. p.s. if you haven't yet,,get your hands on Makana's Cd "Koi Au",,the more you listen the more impressive it gets.

Has anyone tried restringing the low three strings with bass strings? Presumably it would add a lot of extra tension, but for any guitar style with an alternating bass it would seem like it would sound pretty cool.
On that note, Line 6 just announced an acoustic version of their Variax guitar that will allow you to model an acoustic bass on the low strings (and also let you switch instantly between tunings). The Variax is an interesting concept that uses onboard software modeling to allow the guitar to emulate 16 different guitars and plucked string instruments (everything in this case from a Martin Parlor to a D-28 to a nylon string classical to a woodbody dobro and even a mandocello!). |
Craig My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can. |

Innerezzting concept Craig. Something to consider along those lines are (1) a baritone guitar, with a longer scale length. You could use heavier strings for a deeper sound, and (2) a 6 string bass guitar developed in the 1960's. Not like todays sometimes 6 strings, where the spacing is standard and it has well, 6 huge strings. The one I am thinking of was first made in the 60's and was a bass, but had the between string spacing of a standard say, stratocaster. I wish I could remember some of the brands, but I think Fender made one. The strings were thick, but far thinner than a standard bass guitar. Kinda like a baritone, with really thick strings. Am I being too confusing here? Anyway it was tuned an octave lower across all 6 strings just like any bass. You could finger chords however due to the spacing. I will find a link and post back here asap. |

Okeydokey, didn't take too long. Here's a pix of one of those bad boys made currently by Danelectro, and yep, Fender did make them too. Anyway with the fretboard width you could custom size some string guages and have a real cannon.

A blast from my past! I spent many hours at a used electric guitar shop drooling over (not too often on) a similar model by Danelectro in my teens. I had almost forgotten the beast. Also both Michael Hedges (god rest him) and David Wilcox have been known to play in altered tunings with Bass strings inserted in their acoustic guitars for the really low notes. Had to route the hole to accept the extra large string. In a similar vein, a variant of Nashville tuning (Sixth string in standard replaced by clone of fourth string and tuned to E) where the 5th string was matched to the second and tuned to a and the sixth replaced by a clone of the first string and tuned to e. This could be adapted for a killer version of Taro Patch (d g D G B d) if you can ignore the intonation problem. |

Sad but true, according to a music store employye I talked to today, Danelectro is out of business. I did, however, find a baritone guitar (tuned A to A a 5th below standard) at http://www.burnsusa.com/products/the_barracuda.shtml and I tried it at a local guitar shop. Sweet tone but a little hard on the action. Needed a set up, but a nice guitar all the same. It may not be an acoustic steel, but you can't have everything ;) |
