Last Fall's trip on Big Island had several great musical experiences... One school kid in Waimea (age 9 or so) played ukulele for about 10 minutes (when I asked if he could play us something?)...it was like a dead jam--only mobetta'...! Then our coffee guide (Uilani) accompanied her magnificent Hawaiian voice with uke. And finally our Waimea hotel clerk sang and played his tenor Kamaka in a Pele force voice! This is a great use of music in our lives...for the joy of it, and to share--at the drop of a hat!
As a Music Educator in Colorado, Where can I find out about getting certification in Hawaii? Or at least a course in language, Hawaiian music, and especially methods to teach ukulele to students in class settings. It appears to be a part of the music curriculum. Any Educators or others that know a little about music ed in Hawaii? Mahalo, Gordon

You need to contact the state's Department of Education (all public schools are under this department): http://www.ehawaiigov.org/education/html/
All of the schools here in Hawai`i have an outstanding "Kupuna Program", wherein Hawaiian elders regularly instruct the children in various traditional subjects -- many of them "hands on". Hanalei School here on Kaua`i has even been taking some of the keiki to Kalihiwai Bay, where the kupuna are teaching them how to gather food from the ocean -- throwing net to catch fish, picking limu, etc. It's such an enriching program! |
