So who IS going to the Aloha Music Camp in June? Last time the topic was discussed, everyone talked about why they wouldn't be able to go...finances, schedule conflicts, stage fright (that last night 'talent show'). But, Mark says that the camp is pretty much sold out, so SOMEBODY must be going!

I'm going, I know Duke is going, and (obviously) Mark is going. No other TaroPatch 'ohana? I'll be surrounded by newbies?

For those who are going, maybe we should think of a song that we could do as a T-Patch jam session for the talent show. One of Andy's tunes?

Eric

Thanks so much for starting this thread. I have been wondering for a while who will be making it out there, since, as you say, there are so many confirmed no-shows. I will definitely be there and this year I am dragging my hubby along, too. Anybody else?

Woo-hoo! Only 18 short weeks to go.....

Me ke aloha,

Uhmmm,I'm still struggling with some logistics, such as: my son wanted to learn slack key and was interested in Brozman for George's workshop. So I was sort of planning to let hubby and son stay on Maui while I hopped on over to Moloka'i. But now the boy wants to go to Europe instead. Kids!!!! Do I dare leave hubby all alone on Maui with all those gorgeous ladies, while I'm languishing on Moloka'i? Hmmm, what to do, what to do. I'm really torn as I love both workshops.

Julie, I know it's a tough decision to choose between the camps, but I will sorely miss seeing you (and Larry!) if you do not make it over to Moloka`i. Maybe at least hop over for a day trip? Besides, you don't want to blow your shot at the perfect attendance award, do you?

Eric, what we lack in numbers we will make up for with enthusiasm - go taropatch.net `ohana! (got your button ready?)

Me ke aloha,

Debbie B
(you know, I am so used to being "the other Debbie" that I use Debbie B as a default without thinking. Is it possible that I might be (gasp!) the only Debbie here?)

Aloha kakou:
Ahhhhhh. What to do, what to do? After much the same deliberation as Julie, I've finally decided to go Maui dis' year.
But oh Debbie, our only Debbie <BEG> I will miss you, eh? and all the othah fren's I make dat place.
Bob Brozman is a big part of my decision, too - it will be wonderful to see/hear he and Uncle Cyril together. And I'd like the chance to learn from Uncle George and Ozzie, too.
Maybe I'll just have to alternate each year, so i'll see ya next year, unless you come for a visit, your room is ready...

Aloha T/P Ohana's

Where ever you decide to go, You will be learning
the hawaiian culture at it's best.

I jus got back from molokai, if you hav'nt
been there you need to try it out.

Molokai is all about the people, there lifestyle,
And the aloha that everyone on the island shares.

Since this is the first time on molokai
It'll be like stepping back to old Hawaii
where you can actually count the cars that
passes by every 15 min. And the tallest structure
is there light house.

And for the first time on molokai,June 19 the day before
the camp, Milton Lau will bring the slack key festival to
that island. And the following week it'll be on maui. ( the 27th.)

Not because i am going to molokai, i'm saying this.
If you like to experience something different, try it
out. Maui will always be there.

And if you're still having a hard time to decide?
Go, where your "Heart feels it needs to be".

Me Ke Aloha
Kevin

Kevin, thanks for your post. While I am fretful that I will miss seeing certain dear friends because the two workshops overlap, it is glorious that there is enough interest to support both of them. I will go to Moloka`i and enjoy every moment, immersing myself in a joyous experience filled with aloha and sweet music. I am very happy to hear about the festival being held on the 19th, as I have not been able to make the logistics work for going to the one on Maui.

Cathe - alas, it appears that I will have to wait another year to make my debut as Princess of the Kanikapila. Aside from the difficulty in convincing my poor husband that our bank account can endure the cost of yet another plane ticket, things are so busy for me during the school year with getting the boys back and forth to school and all of their activities that it seems getting away is next to impossible.

Me ke aloha,

Debbie

Kevin, that was a truly beautiful sentiment.

Let me add that whichever camp you choose to go to, you will have a wonderful time and you will be honoring Hawaiian culture.

I just had the pleasure of seeing George and Nancy in San Diego, and I'm happy to say that their camp is doing very well. Likewise, the Aloha Music Camp is very nearly sold out. So any worries about the two camps cutting into the available audience seem to be moot. There are a lot of us out there!

It is truly heart warming to see the growth of interest in slack key and Hawaiian music and cuture. Remember that it is only a few short years from the time that you couldn't hear slack key played in Hawai`i, let alone learn it. I have vivid memories of asking about slack key and having the performer put his guitar in the case and walk away... in 1992!

See you all in June -- either on Maui or on Moloka`i... or both.

Cheers,

Mark

Hello everyone,
I just wanted to assure those who are Moloka'i bound that there will be plenty of old friends there, plus a plethora of wonderful (I have no doubt) first-time campers. It's running about half and half. See you all soon!

Hi Annie!

Thanks for dropping in.

Hey, here's a quick question for you all going to Moloka`i. Is it Molokai or Moloka`i?

I know some knowledgeable people who have told me that Molokai actually makes more sense when it comes to meaning of the words. It was also pointed out that most of the people who live there call it Molokai. Someone even showed me the foward of a book written by Mary Kawena Pukui indicating Molokai over Moloka`i. Given this line of thinking, it was explained that musicians actually began saying Moloka`i for lyrical reasons.

On the other hand, I have also spoken to other experts who tell me that it is indeed Moloka`i. I noticed that Kaliko Trapp-Beamer says Moloka`i on the Hawaiian Instant Immersion CDs.

Anyone have an answer? Who's right?

Andy

Aloha, Andy & Lynette

I asked the same question while i was on molokai.
I asked kili about it, and he said it's called "molokai"

I'm not going to question or ask why, after all his the honorary
mayor of molokai.

Even the kupuna's that i've met, they say, molokai.
Maybe i should've asked at that time.

I "USE" to say moloka'i. When i go back i'll ask kili
or one of the kupuna's. It's interesting to hear what
they have to say. Give my aloha! to Lynette.

Everytime i go there i think about the both of you.
We all had a great time on, molokai or moloka'i???

Aloha kakou,
Kevin mentioned the Molokai festival June 19. Does anyone know the best way to travel from Maui to Molokai for the day? And what's the latest someone can stay and still get a ride back to Maui that evening?
Any advice for a new visitor to Maui would be appreciated.

Yeah, best way to Molokai, but some locals might still insist you came on "da cruise ship".
