Aloha , Please someone help me in my search for the rest of this song. I like the version that the Gabby band did back when, also with Attah Isaacs. Was taught the first part of the tune 30 some years ago , but always had trouble with the second part. I play it in C tuning. Send tabs if someone out there knows it in that version , or any other version. Mahalo Nui...Al

Aloha, frozen poi
Hey man! good luck on finding a tab on that song! That's one of my favorite! I've been playing kiho'alu for about 30 years, always wanted to learn it.
My son's been playing for about 12 years. One day he called me in his room and said, Dad, what you think about this song.
I almost fell of his bed. I told him i always wanted to learn it. But could'nt find the time too. ( that was my excuse.)
I asked him how he learned it? He said by listening over and over and over again. ( Gabby's CD.) Took him little over a month.
I play the rhythm part for him, while he play's the lead. At my age, I'm happy with that. ha! ha!
He play's it in a tuning they call "Atta's Tuning" It's tune to an, F. While he's playing it in Atta's tune my guitar is still tuned to taropatch.
I can give you the intro to what i'm playing while on rhythm. I start of with.... F - D# - C# - C - 2 times. and then B-flat - C - C7 2 times then F - A-minor D-minor - B-flat - C - C7 - B-flat - C - C7 - then to F. everthing after that get's real technical.
Sorry wish i could've helped more! Maybe someone can continue on, where i left off. Wish you Luck!

Thanks for the reply Kevin, Not familiar with that F -Atta tuning, would probably take me way too long to figure out. I can hear the melody in my head pretty good but cannot put it to my fingers. The first part of the song I can do and sounds good, but like I said that second part is kinda difficult. Plus no more nobody up here in Oregon that can play it, if there is ...call me. Sometimes its harder to figure out somethings without the help of another player keeping the rythm , I miss that. My bruddahs all live back in Hawaii. Well I'll keep trying . Another thing , any other recordings of that song you know about? Mahalo again,Al
ps... Hele on to kauai in June ...for good! |

Al,
Check out the post titled Atta's C. In it, Reid wrote out a really nice intro to Atta's C. You might find this to be a big help. Good luck! |

Al, I may be off base here, but I believe the song "How D'you Do" is the lead cut on Makana's CD. I got my copy via mele.com. The rest of the CD is awsome as well. Karl |

I'll second that. I wasn't that impressed with Makana's previous CDs, but Ki Ho`alu - Journey of Hawaiian Slack Key is truly outstanding. |

Raymond, check around at places like download.com...there are several CD database programs that will automatically download the song titles from the Internet (via a service called CDDB). Most of the Hawaiian CDs I've fed them have shown up. You can then export from there into your database. |

Al,
Have you looked at Reid's "Atta's C" study? Here's the direct link: http://www.patchett.com/kihoalu/attasc.pdf
In that same post, Don Kauli`a wrote: quote: Atta's C is my favorite tune. I play 'Makaha Moon', 'Manini Slack Key' and 'How'dya Do' in Atta's C.
The same tune that Cyril plays too. I love the low bass string when you alternate the highs and lows. Here's a clue to 'How'dya Do'....hold the F (bar on the 5th fret) and find the rest of the song.
Everybody plays this song different...I had the opportunity of watching Atta play up close 'cause his Son Barney lives across the street from my wife's parents' home in Wai'anae. This was the early 80's when I was in tune to rock and disco. In 1990 I started to really enjoy playing this tune and tried to remember how he used to play it all by himself and if you listen to my version on Freehand...that about the closest I got to remembering Atta's solo styling. I love Atta's style.
I have not tried Atta's C myself, but it seems like there should be enough here to atleast get you started? Please let us know how you make out. |

Just passing on info you asked for. As far as playing it in Atta'a C - well, I don't play "How'd you do?" in any tuning, so, sorry. |

Nice thread you guys...I play this in Atta's C tuning but in the key of F. I think I was lucked out while growing up in Waianae. Atta's son Barney lived across the street from my wife's parents in Waianae. I lived with her and her parents for several years and I used to see Atta in the front yard fiddling his guitar. We all knew who he was but at that time I was into RocknRoll and Top40 stuff. A couple times I remember him jamming How D'You Do and kind of remembered his bar phrasing...he had fat fingers, so you could not see his exact fingering, but man he made the solo performance sound like trio of guitarist performing. That is what I tried mimicking all these years. I recorded that tune on my Freehand Album. I love Atta's tuning and I usually use his tunings live and in the studios as my standard tune. The last concert here in Kona, Cyril and I talked a bit about Atta and Gabby and he was amazed that I favored the Atta tune. So we did some ripping back in the dressing room...before you know it...Braddah Noland, Mike Kaawa and David Kamakahi started ripping Opihi Moe Moe in the key of C...Atta's tune. Awesome to see we all have in common...the love for slack key. |

hey everybody, althought I'm way..no authority on " how'd you do, I believe I can provide so helpful insight. I just goe a copy of makana's version of this tune and found it to be far more accessable than many of the others. I,believe he is using what some people call F wahine ( low to high = CFCGCE ). If you listen to the alternating bass notes I think you'll agree. the chording is very close to atta's C and where it differs it's not hard to adjust. Anyway, give it a try. also baring the 5th fret on this one also give you access to the 2nd part. So bye for now,b3d . |
