i think my dream job would be spending other people's money finding them slack key guitars. sort of GAS by proxy.

i do like rainsongs, especially when you live in a humid place. i think breedloves make good slack key guitars too, especially with that nice strong bass. perfect for doing leonard kwan imitations. then again, i got to try out ikaika brown's ibanez, and it was a great guitar too. could've been all that talent he and kevin have poured into it.

sigh, too many guitars, not enough time or money or walls...

and don't even think of mentioning that word "u******"!

For an alternative to Rainsongs (not that there's anything wrong with Rainsongs), check out http://www.caguitars.com

speaking of guitars, we got a chance to play cpatch's very own new c. fox guitar. i have a deep and persistent guitar envy pain right now. that guitar sounded better than even a froggy bottom i played at McCabe's (okay, i've never played one of grime's guitars, but this one must stand up admirably to even that kind of competition).

i got some photos of us with this fabled guitar at the M3 coffeehouse last night that i'll post later today. they're important if for no other reason to prove that he does indeed do a lot more than post here on taropatch.

I don't know if I'd go so far as to say "a lot".

Hey all, Karl...I did pick up the ovation and I love it!...And that's the main thing. Heck I even play Slack on a 1970 3/4 size Hondo...and it's just fun! Think I'll look into that deerskin thing. The Ovation can be like a wet fish at times! Mahalo!...Wow checked out your bio-pic! Looks colder than our Cleveland winter weather, but the muffled mitten Idea sure must soften the tunes!..Ken.

Those are pretty cool, but theres something bout the Rainsongs? I like the fact that the older ones were made in Maui and I also like Fishman system better than LR Baggs. Nice design though.

Ken,
If you ever heard me play, you would understand that the mittens actually brighten my tone. Well, it was just a gag picture, me in my wannabe Hawaiian garb, sitting by the fire pit, a mile from the nearest neighbor, in 3 feet of snow. Hey, it is better than summer when the mosquitoes (the Alakskan state bird, by the way) swarm around and carry you away.

Aloha All,
While on the subject of guitars, i am finally undrtaking the building of my first axe. I bought some nice koa in Hilo back in '97, just had it sliced into thin boards, and am ready to begin a Weissenborn lap jobby. Does anybody know of a set of plans for one of those babies? I was fortunate enough to copy a template from Bob Gleason (Pegasus Guitars) in Hilo. He had one taken apart for repairs, and I took a bunch of measurements, but forgot a couple important ones, such as, scale length! Headstock angle. Width of neck. Height of bridge. Just little things, really, guess i could just wing it. But, I sure would hate to ruin a good piece of wood. Doing so would have no positive vibes, not even using the scraps for heat during the winter.

Wow, you guys up there must not have much of a social life if you have time to build a guitar --- either that or just too much sunlight

Yeah, Raymond, we make the time we need for anything we do, eh? Thisone I'e sat on for 7 years already, better maske the time now or it will ne4verr get done. Biggest thing holding me back is fear of failure....oh, I can put the dang tihng together, but will it look like anything??? or sound like anything??? Up to now my most common instrument of destruction or construction has been the chainsaw.. I'm afraid those skills won;t help me much on this project. This ain't cuttin' the winter's firewood!
Wish me luck.

Hey Karl, I know this subject of the Weissborn is running
on another thread, but I'm already here.

Something you might find interesting is go to www.guitarseminars.com
and go to the forum. Do a search. There are a couple of
folks there who have made such. Lots of good info on that site.

Stew-Mac would be my suggestion. I know they have plans for the
style. Whassa kinda wood are you considering to do it? I know I read you had some koa, but you going to do the top in it as well?

Karl,
I friend of mine who is a very good woodworker tried his hand at making a violin for his wife. Dimension, etc. weren't thhe problem, but getting the best sound. He eventually enlisted the aid of a luthier to give him 3 "tutorial session" when it came to the critical moments. Paid $100 per session. Ended up wit a beatiful sounding box.
I vaguely remember seeing an add for a video tape series that might be of help -- I think it was in one of the companies the sell to luthiers and advertise in back of Acoustic Guitar.
I've also been told that there is a lot of info on the website and CD put out by Gryphon, a guitar shop in Palo Alto, CA
