Hi, I'm Diana from Berkeley. I'm just starting to play slack key guitar. I'm truly in love with Hawaiian music, especially Dennis Kamakahi, Lei'ohu Ryder, Moses Kahumoku, Keali'i Reichel, Amy Gilliam, George Kuo and many others actually...

I sure would appreciate any leads on slack key guitar teachers out here. I only know of Patrick Landeza but I don't know if he teaches and if so, how to get a hold of him.

Thanks for this site. It's wonderful!

Diana

Aloha Diana,

Your favorites above do not include all Hawaiiana, but
I thought you might be interested in the fact that
Berkeley has a Hawaiian Bar/Restaurant/Peformance Space
called "Temple Bar". THIS SUNDAY the host band is
Hiram Bell's Ukulele students (who will also be playing
at the 11th Annual Northern California Ukulele festival
in a few weeks - in Hayward). Hiram has his students
do some very interesting and challenging arrangements
(like four or five part arrangments of Quiet Village
and Ulili' E and others).

These events are also "open mike" in a loose sense (there
is no standard sign up sheet - you have to find the host).

So there will probably be some slack-key played by local
afficionatos (maybe even me - as my wife is playing in the
uke ensemble).

here is the link to Temple Bar:

http://templebar.org/

and here is the link to the uke fest:

(this is a don't miss it event! - the best thing for $5 you can get
in the SF Bay Area)

Patrick is a good teacher. He's been doing a lot of touring, though lately. I try to play slack key at Templebar with their Ukulele group sometimes. They meet on Tuesday nights. But Aloha Sundays (first sunday of the month) is when there are host bands and open mics. They're on University. E-mail Pat at his web site. . . patricklandeza.com. He's also here as "hwnslacker".

Aloha Diana,
I know what you mean about trying to find a teacher in your area. I am in ALaska, so it's videos, tab bllks and ear training for me at the moment. Patrick was here in February with Dennes K., Cyril Pahinui and Cindy Combs, and I got a 2 am lesson from him. He is a very good instructor and shoudl be easily rechable via email. If you cannot find local instruction, I am working on personalized video instruction and might have some ideas for you.

Aloha Diana,
I think it is so nani when na wahine play music. But extra sweet when they play Kiho'alu. Good luck to you and to all na wahine on the "patch"...keep up the good work. I'm a newbie too, a day after you in fact...but welcome to you, too, Diana. A hui hou...Keali'i K.

Remember kids,

Practice safe typing. Every time you use an
emoticon, you break another guitar string. If
not your own, then someone elses.

I just found out how to use them, and why, and now I am an emoticon addict. I may have to check myself in.
cmdrpiffle, as long as it is not my string that is snapping.
A hui hou...Keali'i K.
