Howzit, I'm glad I stumbled onto this site. I could talk about Hawaiian music all day. It is nice to talk to people who actually like the same thing too. If you want to talk Aunty Genoa or Hui Ohana...I am an expert. Nah, just love them plenty. Now little history about me. I was in the Army from '89-'93 stationed in Germany with a brief stint in Kuwait. Before I went in, I had been into pop music of the 80's. Songs like "Planet Rock", and R/B songs like "Pennies for your thoughts" and "Crusin'". Born and raised in Hawaii, I never even picked up a ukulele or Guitar before. In Germany, I developed a serious case of homesick blues. Luckily, I met this ohana stationed up there who were originally from Kona. Brada Clay taught me how to play ukulele and I was hooked on Hawaiian Music. I occasionally still listen to my old R/B songs but it is 99% Hawaiian Music, now. When I got back home, I started driving "Hawaii's own: The Bus" as a city bus driver. Due to an accident in '96, I needed serious back surgery where they fused my lower back. I had to resign, recently, due to complications from surgery. Akua wanted me to head in another direction and I am now back in college trying to earn my Bachelor degree in Human Services. While I was layed up after my surgery, I wanted to learn to play the Kiho'alu. It got me through some of the tough times when I just wanted to escape for a little while. It was the best at letting me go to my "happy place". Now, with the help of Aunty Genoa's grandson Puni Keawe-Aiko, and brada Iz's nephew Len Kamakawiwo'ole, I am learning the bass to fulfill a dream of mine to play Hawaiian music in a group. I think my tutu would be smiling down at me if I can accomplish this. When, and if, it happens I will lovingly share our music with you all at the "Patch". Aloha a hui hou...Keali'i Kahumoku.

Aloha e Sarah, Mahalo nui loa for welcoming myself into the "patch". Thanks in letting me know about uncle Led's video. I did'nt know he had an instructional video until I saw it on this website. I went to the Tower records and other music stores looking for a long time but only found the one he did with Bob Brozeman, which is just them kanikapila. Now I can save my kala, nickles and pennies, and pick it up. It would be great for it to be on DVD, but I am tickled it even exists. Mahalo nui a hui hou...Keali'i K. |

Eh Keali'i,
You forgot to mention that your hometown of Aiea is (I think) the only post office (i.e. zip code) in the U.S. comprised solely of vowels (only in Hawai'i yeah?)
Ah yes, we all harken back to that famous line uttered by a frustrated Nicholas Cage in "Honeymoon In Las Vegas" - "Is if Kawa, Ka'awa, or Ka'a'awa??"
:-)

Aloha Ted, You know I lived in Aiea for about 8 years and I never really realized that vowel thing you mentioned. I was raised in Ewa Beach, when it was still country, and I would be able to tell you all kinds of trivia about there. Aiea, not too much. I guess growing up on the beach is something I remember vividly from my childhood. Also, I never got to see "Honeymoon...". Was it any good? I only like a few of Cage's movies and, to tell you the truth, I cannot even pick one off the top of my mind to save my soul. Let me know what you thought of the movie. Should be cheap to rent now at the video store, since it has been out for awhile. A hui hou...Keali'i K. |
