hi, fellow slackers -

i wanted to give a brief report from maui. i just got back last night from a whirlwind trip to the valley island. on sunday i got to play with fellow taropatchians kevin brown and bill pellazar. we got together at paul's house, up on the slopes of haleakala. paul, who went to school and learned slack key from leondard kwan (paul has a jazzy swing in his music too), also makes a mean pipi stew. also there was hal, butch, and russell. plenty of people to learn from for me! about half of the group played nylon strings. plenty of talkin' story too - one of the big topics being the south swell and the need to get out and surf it.

there's a new book out on hawaiian songs, lyrics and ukulele chords, which i had picked up at costco in kahului. paul had done the same, and by five pm the group was working their way through the book, noticing when they had learned different lyrics. they all know a million songs.

bill is doing great, feels fine, and is playing better than ever. i recorded a song of his i'd like to learn (i'll post the name later). i have some photos of paul, bill and kevin that i'll post later as well.

kevin is getting ready to be teaching some great songs at the beamer aloha music camp. i got a preview of them at border's.

bill and kevin send their aloha to the taro patch `ohana. both have been pretty busy, and bill's kids tie up his computer, so they aren't here as much as they'd like to be.

keith

Those pix are great. It is clear that Kevin has developed a new form of slack key yoga. Imagine playing in that position - and beautifully, as always. And Bill has a new do!

Those of you who will be Kevin's students at Aloha Camp are in for a treat. Kevin gets the best out of everyone. He is also one of the funniest story tellers ever. His Tahitian stories come complete with French accents and, in all stories, he sort of acts them out. Ask about the time that he and Ikaika and Kaipo went pig chasing/hunting in the West Maui mountains.

...Reid (Somehow, the things that happen in CT are not nearly as much fun.)

BTW! How are you feeling? Just about a week ago, I went in for a back adjustment.....Needed it! With my job.....at least once a month! Other than that, I am doing great! Wished you and Sarah, Andy and Lynnette was with us that day in Makawao.

I got there late tho Hal wen give me da wrong address az why, ha! ha! ha! And by the time I made it to Paul's house, Hal had already left to get ready for work, and the other two guys that I met was just leaving too. But got to grind Paul's ono-kine stew! Whoooooooooh....broke-da 'mout! Li'dat.

Well time to hit the sack! Got to get-up early for work in the morning that's why. Hey feel better Reid! Keep playing that slack key stylings....It's great medicine!

Sarah! Looking forward to hear your Hi'ilawe Stylings, and the new tunes you're now playing. A Hui Hou!

Aloha e Keith,

Thanks for your kind words. We will miss the workshops and festivals this year. No plans for travelling. But we'll be there in spirit! And we'll be glued to TP to read all about it, and see the pics that are posted (hint-hint!).

Aloha e Slackkey Bill,

Glad you got your back adjusted and are feeling better! You're right, slack key is great medicine. Either playing or listening - it's great either way. Hey, we wish we'd been there for some pipi stew!

me ke aloha,
Sarah
