Who is your favorite Hawaiian Falsetto singers/groups. Got a story? Or know of some up and comer's worth looking out for...Please share.

Where are you?...o.k., I guess I'll break the ice.
I love the "young stallions" out now, such as: Palapalai, Raiatea Helms and Cody Pata. But the legends are the "bomb": George Helms, Hui Ohana, Aunty Genoa, Kindy Sproat, Ho'opi'i Brother's, Aloha Pumehana Serenader's, Tina Ka'apana and Aunty Diana Aki. A hui hou, Keali'i |

Some more...
Maunalua, Akoni Malacas, Darren Benitez, Palolo and Gary Haleamau. Plenty good ones. Hui Ohana and the Ho'opi'i Brothers probably set the bar for the modern singers in terms of both quality and repertoire. Of the old timers, Lena Machado, Auntie Genoa and George Helm are favorites. Joe Keawe was a great one, too, with an effortless slide up to falsetto range. Jesse Tinsley |

I no know some names, but Melinda and I go to Kindy's "Falsetto and Story-Telling Contest" a few years ago, and everybody one winner! Ho, brah! Kindy gettin' kahiko, but can still get da chicken skin! That song about Honaunau....

The "Kindy Sproat" contest is, in my humble opinion, by far where the best falsetto singer's are born. They had Akoni(you should get) and Kalei Bridges(another one), just to name a few. "Newer" singers you could explore is "Na Palapalai"(they also had a earlier recording with Akoni..."Akoni and Na Palapalai Patch" which is excellent). Raiatea Helms or pretty much any of the singers mentioned from hapakid or others above. If you don't have any of the legends...it's a must get. A lot of the old stuff are, fortunatly, being re-released on C.D.'s. I am still a "vinyl" guy, though. A hui hou, Keali'i. |

Ae AM,
Leabert's c.d. was pretty good especially the "Owl song". I first saw him in this show that uncle Led put on to showcase his Jus' press label. I was impressed with Leabert's smooth delivery. He also has some songs on the Kindy Sproat's "Cowboy album" which was good too. The album also has some kiho'alu for anybody else who never heard of this c.d.
Darlene is also nani. The album she made with Gary Haleamau was great too. I rememeber hoping she would do something on her own, back then. One, because she sounded good. But another was because she was a "cutie". And then "bam", she garners all kinds of awards for her great work on her recordings. A hui hou, Keali'i. |

| If you really want to immerse yourself in the sound of the legends try the CD "Legends of Falsetto" from Cord/Hanaola HOCD35000 Great sonic restoration and informative notes. Then there is my absolute favorite: Mike Hanapi who played dynamite steel guitar and sang haunting falsetto with Kalama's Quartette in the 1920s. Available on "Kalama's Quartette" Arhoolie CD 7028 which may be available through Cord International for one stop shopping. Regards, AT. |

Also, the new "Territorial Airwaves" c.d. is good too. The Hui Ohana are having a re-release out soon. It is songs from 2 or 3 albums. Still waiting for them to re-release "Aloha Pumehana" and "Ono" on disc.

E, somebody got one grant for my record collection (I'm a hold-out for vinyl, too)? I've so loved Darlene's duets with George and Keoki. There's not enought time left in my life to hear all the great music already there, none the less the music yet to come. What's a kanaka to do?? |

The Kanaka can get his okole to Costco or Sam's Club where they have the cheapest, I seen, prices on Hawaiian c.d. at about $9.99 and up to $13.00. Around "Na Hoku Hanohano" award time, there are sales at Tower Records that are pretty comparable.
I have been getting pretty lucky on my vinyls. Got my Hui Ohana albums at Kam Swap Meet and garage sales. And Eddie Kamae from contacts by asking at my pool where I work out. But, it would be nice to win the "Publisher's Clearing House" to buy all you can, yeah Bwop? A hui hou,Keali'i. |

Ditto on Diane Aki! Does she have other tracks out besides with uncle George K. on "Troubled Paradise"; I know she's on that S.K. Video with George too?
Maybe I missed it, but did nobody mention Dennis Pavao?
Surely my favorite.
Check out Kai Smith, a young guy from Hana. Full name I think, Kai Olohia Fuentes K. Smith. Ululoa Productions, also from Hana.
Has some unique phrasings; some cool pauses I don't think I've heard elsewhere. He was in SF last year(surprisingly) with Ledward, Pueo Cody Pata and Owana Salazar. CD seems pretty available. See Mele.com
Also just heard at the Maui Celebration of the Arts another young guy first name Kamaka. Won one of the Falsetto contests last(?) year. Great story behind him. African-American baby was adopted from Mainland South, Tennessee(?) by Hawai`ian family at very young age; went through Kamehameha Schools and all. Had Uncle Richard Ho`opi`i nodding his approval when he sang after-hours in the Ritz lobby.
Don't know that he's recorded commercially yet; surely will. Lives on Maui I believe.
Mahalos for the topic Hui ohana! Now just need the `ol budget increase to fill the shelf with more CD's(hey, they're cheaper than ukes!).

| If "Kamaka" was a 2003 falsetto contest winner, he'll be included in the next Aloha Festivals Falsetto Contest CD -- usually released late in the following year of competition. All 4 volumes released so far, are full of some the _best_ island falsetto. |

One more -- not new, but his one and only recording was just re-released in CD format. Whenever I play this on the radio, inevitably someone will call and ask, "Who was that female singer?".
