Aloha Rossasaurus, Aunty Diana Aki had at least two solo recordings out..."Moments with you" and "Precious Hawaii" is the two that I know of, and have, and are great. For awhile, "Moments..." was only on cassette, it is on disc, now. I still play them, now, and enjoy it alot. Aunty also has appearances on several artist(s) albums throughout time. I've got uncle Eddie Kamae's "Eddie Kamae presents Son's of Hawaii"...the one they are all on the porch...and Aunty Diana is on that album singing "Keiki Mahine", "La Elima" and another song that has slipped my mind. It was the first time uncle Eddie had a wahine on his recordings. I believe uncle Moe Keale was on that one, too. I am not sure if they have released this selection on disc, but if you can find it on vinyl(as I got lucky to do), Aunty's voice was very nice to the ears, then too as it is now. A hui hou, Keali'i |

Whoa braddah K, didn't know the topic would blow up so quick! My fav's: Gary Haleamau, Dennis Pavau, Hoku Zuttermeister, Ata Damasco, Darren Benitez, Na Palapalai, Aunty Genoa, Mahi Beamer, Kahauanu Lake. The list goes on & on. I had the privilege of competing in the Kindy Sproat competition a couple years back and the amount of undiscovered talent there was incredible! Thanks for starting the thread Keali`i! |

Aloha kakou, I just wanted to spread a little news if anyone was interested. As I mentioned to BWOP, I believe, that sometimes at garage sales and swap meet type of places were good for vinyl, I was very fortunate to find Hui Ohana's albums #1-8 releases. And also their last studio one simply titled "Hui Ohana", the one with the Ko'olau's as the backdrop(by the way, that was an awesome painting of them.) But, the news I wanted to let you know was, they still have some of their albums left. For whomever that live on Oahu...it is the "Jelly's" in Pearl City (Waimalu). As of last night, there was an "ONO", "Ke Kolu", "Aloha Pumehana" and "Live at the Hawaii Studio's". And also 2 copies each of "Hana Hou" and "Hui Ohana". If anyone is interested...Go get 'em!!!
Aloha Brada Steve, Ho man...you was going get lickin' pretty soon! Nah, Hawaiian...jus' chokin'!!! I also got to get a "K-Lake" album at "Jelly's", too. I think it was the at one of the Waikiki hotels. Royal Hawaiian or something. Or maybe Halekulani. One of them...but anyway the reason was it had "Pua Lililehua". My tutu wahine used to always "abuse" that song when I was a keiki. So it brings back some memories. She also used to play,(and mom and tita used to dance to), "Wahine Hololio" and "Nani Venuse". That's why when I first heard Na Palapalai's version of "Nani Venuse", made me laugh about those times.
How was your time at uncle Kindy's competition? How did you do(placing wise)? And yeah, I agree on the talent over there. Although there is pretty good Leo ki'eki'e singer's here in the Frank B. competition, you cannot touch the Kindy one. I wish they had a disc of the winner's and other entrants from that contest as they do for the Frank B. one. Oh, well...
A hui hou, kakou...Keali'i |

No, didn't place that year, but was really fun! Met some great people. Bulla and Kehau helped me out with the music since I couldn't afford to bring my group at the time. Got some great advice from kupuna before hand that I still cherish! On that same trip also got to meet Akoni and the original Palapalai Patch and even sat in for a couple songs. All in all the experience was great and I would definitely do it again. I think the Falsetto compilations that have been coming out are a mixture of both the Kindy and Frank B. Shaner Comps. I remember that was one of the prizes for the winner. |

I'm no expert on Leo Ki`eki`e artists, but that's never stopped me from having an opinion before! My favorites:
- Kaiolohia K. Funes Smith - Uluwehi Guerrero (my favorite "Radio Hula") - Gary Haleamau - Dennis Pavao - Aunty Genoa |
Craig My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can. |

Aloha Craig, My favorite from Uluwehi is "Radio Hula", too. I remember thinking "wow, I did'nt know that kiho'alu number was a song with words."
Brada Steven, Trip out story of Bulla. I assume you are referring to Bulla "Kailiwai". If it is...while I was stationed in Germany, I had been hanai'd by his mama and daddy. I was at a local high school football game, and his mom told his sister to ask me where I was from. So she quietly asked me the question and I answered "Hawaii". This cute 12 year old yelled out "MA, HE'S FROM HAWAII" and the whole stadium turned around. Was so funny. They invited me to their hale and that is where all my love for Hawaiiana started. By the way, Bulla was a very, very good football player. He was only a freshman and playing on the varsity. He was sticking some military kids that were nearly 5+ inches taller and 80 to 100# heavier than he was. He played linebacker at about 150#. He was good. It was a trip to see him at the Merrie Monarch a few years later, dancing and playing music. Heck, he was learning the same time I was up Germany. Gun funnit, kid. You are correct about the release of the Falsetto winners. The ones I wanted to be release was the ones prior to when the Frank B. contest started, too. By the way, How's about Kalei Bridges "Pakalana"? That's my fav. from him. A hui hou,(finally) Keali'i |

Wow cool, and the world keeps getting smaller! Yeah, same Bulla. The year I entered was 2000 and he had just won a couple of years earlier, so he gave me some really good advice. Kehau was really helpful with words of wisdom also (this was way before Na Palapalai). She played bass and Bulla played uke. Didn't realize the football history, although I knew he was coaching little league recently. I forgot another outstanding leo ki`e ki`e artist who often gets overlooked: Chino Montero (Palolo). Braddah can hit da Ha`i's with the best of em! |

Oops, correction. I played uke, but I had borrowed Bulla's uke since mine had some intonation problems that day. Kehau was still on bass and uncle Matt Manewa on guitar. Solid band! |

Ho, yeah brah...Chino is one good one too. I could'nt believe he pulled that fair skin kine. What is he...Pocho, yeah? I would have guessed Nathan Nahinu, since I know brada Troy does'nt sound like that. Funny, for me, that is what makes me put an artist over the top...is if you can Ha'i nahenahe and in the right spots. Like Aunty Genoa and Ho'opi'i's. But, Chino is right there. But, besides uncle Led and Dennis guys of course, my favorite for Ha'i 's is Keao Costa. That guys can become one legend if he does'nt get all big head. Even Kuana Torres is excellent. And Kehau, for that matter.(Shoot, should have just named the whole band, yeah?) A hui hou, Keali'i |

I know...nobody even said anything. No newspapers or nobody. Just like Ross, I like to try and spread some of the news in case somebody like know. Mahalo nui, Brada Ross. Just picked it up yesterday. Small kine "ue" when I first slapped the disc in the player. You can hear where they, possibly, "filled" in the unfinished parts. But, it turned out Great!!! It would have been nice for uncle Led and Ned to "fill" in their harmonies to some of the songs like "Sanoe" and "Kalua". Kind of like a "aloha" to the Hui Ohana part. Eh, maybe akua will bless someone with that project in the future. A hui hou,K |
