Not slack key, per se, but this tour generated lots of interest among taropatchers last year -- and is starting again (with the addition of Sean Na`auao and Robi Kahakalau) this week. First will be mainland west coast (and slightly inland); later in the year, mid-west and east coast gigs are in the works.

Saw them last year out on the Pier in Seattle. Great Show!! I'm looking forward to tomorrow night's show at the Chateau Ste Michelle winery.

For any Taropatchers that will be there - I'm the Haole guy with a greying goatee, a braided rat-tail, and a beautiful girlfriend. Stop by and say howzit. :)

Aloha a hui hou,
Chris P.

Aloha Bruddah Chrispy!

There were a LOT of haoles with greying goatees, rat-tails, and beautiful wahines! Which one were you?

Auntie Maria,

Chateau Ste Michelle is a perfect place for a concert on a sunny day, and this was Seattle at its best: blue skies, sunny, about 80 degrees with a gentle breeze. We got there early (2.5 hours before concert start) and set up a picnic blanket on the wide expanse of lawn, just behind the (very uncomfortable looking) 'reserved chairs'. The lawn rises gently from the stage, so even sitting on the ground we were at about 'knee level' with the performers, right in front...perfect spot.

The concert started up with a local hula halau. E kala mai...I forget the name, we were already into our second bottle of wine by that point. However, I was impressed how smooth and elegant they were...didn't look like 'amateur' talent, looked competition ready.

Show started with Sean Na'auao. Great voice, great fun! At one point he called for "any hula dancers in the audience, please come up on stage", and was quickly inundated with 20+ eager women. He left them on stage for awhile, letting them help him sing the next song.

After a 2 song 'hana hou', Sean left and Willie K and Amy came up. The show was pretty much a repeat of last year's 'Aloha Live on the Pier' in downtown Seattle (which makes up a large part of the 'Willie K and Amy Live' (http://www.mele.com/v3/info/2774.htm). If you like Amy and Willie, this CD is a 'must have'). Lots of good energy, lots of fun. Willie did a short but fairly astounding opera piece that got the fans to their feet applauding.

At the end, Sean rejoined them for about 15 minutes of hana hou, and everyone went home upbeat, happy, and perhaps a trifle inebriated.

Aloha kakou,

Bruddah erksome summed it up pretty well.

We were sitting center stage, on the lawn, halfway between da uncomfortable chairs in da front an da uncomfortable chairs in da back.

The winery is a great venue. You can't bring in any outside alcohol, but they'll sell you a bottle of very nice wine at reasonable prices. Consequently, everyone was feelin' happy. An they don't mond you bringin in food, so in typical Hawaiian style everyone was bringing in 40-gallon coolers of grinds.

As far as the show goes, I'd call it a great concert in general, but only average for Willie K. Maybe I come spoiled after last year's show. The music was just as good but the in-between stuffs, which is da soul of a WK&A concert wasn't quite as good. Still, good fun.

Aloha a hui hou,
Chris P.

See, this is why you need your taropatch.net buttons!

Great idea, Debbie! Mahalo!

Anyone at the Maui slack key festival notice the Taropatch button on Mike Ka`awa's hat?

Ha! Yes, Andy, I did notice the button when he was up on stage. I was very tickled to see him wearing it. I thought mine kind of got lost in the pattern of my dress, so the jaunty chapeau thing really appealed to me!

Hey, I was kind of hoping you would post the group shot from after the show - any chance we will get to see it, or was the light too dim?

Crazy thing is that I still need to develop that film. I suspect that it was a bit too dark though. I also need to go through my digital photos and post some.

Yowza! Man, would my husband be mad at me if he saw THAT! I meant "I am anxiously awaiting THE date of the SHOW in Chicago". (It was briefly on the tourlist for mid-August at Navy Pier, but fell off the radar after a while)

Gee, you taropatch guys are a tough audience....
