Not many builders here but this may be of interest to players and the few builders. Kawika Hurd, whose `ukuleles are highly praised by many including Keola Beamer, has released a book titled:

"Left-Brain Lutherie"
Using Physics and Engineering Concepts for Building Guitar Family Instruments:
An Introductory Guide to Their Practical Application
.

And if you're going to be in Hilo, be sure to call him and get a tour of his workshop!

Kawika's approach to his work is very much from an engineering background -- yet his music and the beautiful instruments he makes, have deep, rich soul.

When we first met years and years ago, he was a struggling luthier. Now I understand from friends, that he's got a "wait list" of 2-3 years for one of his outstanding creations.

Last Time I looked, he wasn't taking any more orders. He is full up for years. Nonetheless, a visit with him is wonderful. Sarah and I spent about 3 hours with him a few years ago and got the full rundown. He never tires of answering questions or demoing his stuff, including his wood stash and experiments. He had an astounding Western red cedar top set that rang like a bell and had a fantastic *blue* sap stripe running the length of it. On the off chance that he would get some time to work with it on a travel guitar (which he said is in his plans), I asked him to set it aside for me. But it seems that it will never happen. He told us that he "underestimated the availability and power of disposable income".

But, it is nice to know that he is doing well. And, you *could* buy one of his very cool T-shirts. Sarah loves hers.
