Back from the Big Island. Attended the Waikoloa Slack Key Festival on the 5th. Lots of talent - nonstop for 6 hours. Milton Lau did a great job organizing a varied musical program. Jeff Peterson did an amazing job with incredible guitar technique. Ditto for Paul Togioka who has two beautiful maple (I think) guitars that really sing. Most impressed by these two. Dennis and David Kamakahi did some great stuff and Mrs Chunk and I finally got to meet Dennis's wife Robin. Led was great, doing his own set as well as leading the "Native Hawaiian Band" kanikapila. John Keawe and Hope were wonderful. Big time intro for Moe Keale's nephew Walter, who had the stones to open with "Over the Rainbow" and "Hawaii 78". I thought "he better be good" and he absolutely nailed them. No recorded music yet, but he's just moved to Hawaii from California and is performing with Kawika Kahiapo and Dwight Kanae. This guy has a big voice and plays ukulele. Uncle Moe is there in Walter's music. Got to meet Kona Bob and don Kualia who also did a good gig. Don't miss any of these festivals if you have some options. |

Paul uses a pair of Doyle Dykes signature model guitars by Taylor. http://www.taylorguitars.com/guitars/models/pix/ddsm2.jpg
Welcome home, Terry. Sounds like you had a ball. |

Can't wait to hear Walter Keale -- and he's teamed up with 2 great musicians. Funny thing is, Dwight Kanae and David Kahiapo teamed up with Del Beazley awhile back as "3 D".
Now we've got Keale, Kanae & Kahiapo -- will they be "3 K"?
Paul Togioka is one of those "wow, who is _that_ guy?!?" players -- lives here on Kaua`i, has recorded 2 CDs (out of print, "`Ohana O Kaua`i"), but his day job keeps him away from the limelight (dang it).
Next island Slack Key Festival is Kaua`i (yay, I get to drive down to south shore for that one!): Sunday, November 21 at 12 noon -- Hyatt (Po`ipu) |

Brittni,
Didn't mean to leave you out. We got there late and I only caught the tail end of your set, but what I heard was pono. Ho'omaika`i. For the Taro Patch gang, look for Brittni's CD. Also, a head's up - John Keawe will be touring with Keola this winter. Check John's Website for details. |

Hi this is Brittni. I changed me username to Kahealani, just to let everyone know.
Yeah, it was a bummer that the ukulele festival was canceled. It would have been a lot of fun. |

Aloha Brittni!
Did you get my email about having possible relatives in Oregon? If you tour the mainland, you must come and stop in Eugene! If nothing else, we'll all have to get your cd now!

Hi Maggie,
Yes, I did get your e-mail. I'm so sorry for not e-mailing sooner. This week has been so busy with promotion of the CD. No, we're not related to any Paivas in Oregon as far as I know. Thank you for asking, though!
Yeah, sure! I would love to stop by when we tour the mainland! Thank you for the inviting me! |
