Hello,
Is there a considerable (or at least noticeable) size difference between a concert and soprano uke? I am very use to my Martin D-15 and Epiphone AJ-1 acoustics and would feel more comfortable holding the most substantial-sized uke I could get my hands on. Any suggestions on mid-range ukes would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Aloha e Juan,
Most people notice a difference in size between the soprano and concert when playing. Soprano is 13-13.5" scale and concert is around 15". The difference is more noticeable when you move up to tenor, with a 17" scale, especially if you have fingers like I do. And most tenors have an overall mellower sound, but not always. I played a Lanikai tenor yesterday and it sounded great, though not as warm as a solid wood uke.

i heartily second jesse's comments. i find a soprano uncomfortably small and a concert tolerably small. i can't tell the difference between a soprano and a concert based on the sound. my favorite size is a tenor, and i think that i can tell the difference in sound too (but i could flunk a double blind test...)

i also agree with jesse's assessment of lanikai ukes.

agreeably,
keith

I have large hands (and large feet and, yes, for the curious, a large nose) and also found a soprano to be too small...I mainly noticed it when trying to jam fingers onto adjacent strings in the same fret, especially for hammer-ons. A concert is fine though.

My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can.

I agree with the others that there is an appreciable difference between a soprano and a concert. However, (if this makes any sense) I've noticed that many higher end soporanos are not as cramped as some of the less expensive models. I don't know if it's a real difference but the more expensive ones seem to cramp my hands less.
