At the Kahilu Theater. Anybody have the skinny on who'll be there this year. For that matter; anybody here go last year? How was it? We'll be over there then and there's not much on the website yet.

It's not under construction. Here's the corrected link: www.denniskamakahiproductions.com.
Brittni, you inadvertantly made the period part of the link. |

Ross
I went last year and thought it was wonderful. The instructors were Dennis and David Kamakahi, Led Kaapana, Jeff Peterson, Gordon Mark and Chris Kamaka. Given that those same folks will be playing the concert that precedes the workshop, I would guess that the roster is pretty much the same this year, although they also look to have Alan Akaka and Debashish Bhattacharya for a concert on Saturday, so perhaps they will be involved also. The class sizes varied from 3 folks in David's beginning uke class to over a dozen for the more popular slack key classes. They offered Master classes which were limited to 10 students for more one-on-one instruction. The kanikapilas at night are awesome - the first hour is some of the instructors, then for the second hour the students join them up on stage for some jamming. I suppose it is similar to the kanis at George's camp, but I haven't made it there yet so it was pretty special to me. It was also a fairly local affair - I was practically the only person there from off island, let alone out of state.
Once I got there the folks running the show were very nice, but they did seem fairly disorganized ahead of time. I was practically begging them for information as the workshop get nearer, b/c I was going out specifically for the workshop and needed to know dates and such in order to buy my plane tickets.
I stayed at the Kamuela Inn while I was there, and so did the instructors, so there was some great music at night in the common area, although I just listened from my room b/c I was too shy to invade their space.
Also, Ross, if you do end up going, could I ask you a huge favor? Last year, I met a lovely lady from Waimea named Doris Purdy. She is originally from Indiana but ended up living the paniolo life on the Big Island. We hit it off wonderfully, but I misplaced her address. If she should happen to be there and you could get her address for me again, I would be very, very grateful. She came with her husband who is getting up in years but obviously still has a lot of love for his guitar.
Me ke aloha,
Debbie |

Thanks, Eric! That should be her - she is married to Martin Purdy. Such a lovely lady. |

Thanks gang!
Looks like this workshop series has changed dates, so I'll leave it at that. We'll still be on Maui, so another year maybe.
Debbie, if I run into your frinds, I'll get the info for you for sure. |

Hi Debbie, I kanikapila with Doris every Friday, and will probably see her today. I will print out your message and give it to her. She is indeed a rare gem!
The Ukulele Guild of Hawaii has been invited to be part of the Slack Key Institute this year. I know that Dennis Lake is planning to be up there with some of his fine ukuleles on Friday and Saturday. I will also have several of my slack key bass sticks on display.
As for the disorganization - uh, yes, it does seem to take them forever to get information on their web site. I should call up there later today and let then know that we are all waiting for more information. If you plan to come, I second the idea of getting a room at the Kamuela Inn.
Aloha, -Konabob |

Thanks, Konabob! Now I am really sorry that I won't be coming out this time. It would have been wonderful to visit with you and Dennis - that would have been icing on the cake. Sadly, the budget just won't allow for 2 trips a year to Hawai`i, and it is almost impossible to get away during the school year. I'm still not exactly sure how I talked my husband into letting me go last year! Anyway, do give my fondest regards to both Doris and Dennis.
Me ke aloha,
Debbie |
